Statistics indicate that more middle-aged couples in Florida and across the U.S. are choosing to get a divorce, sometimes after 30 or 40 years of marriage - if not more. In fact, one out of every four divorces these days involves a Baby Boomer couple, according to the National Center for Family and Marriage. That is a sharp increase from 1990, when only 10 percent of divorces were between middle-aged spouses. Interestingly, 66 percent of such divorces are initiated by the wives, a survey by AARP found.
Every couple has unique reasons for initiating a divorce, but some general trends may help to explain the higher rate of "gray divorces" in this country. For one thing, the Baby Boom generation was the first where large numbers of women worked outside of the home and earned enough to take care of themselves. Today, after years of working middle-class jobs, women in their 50s and 60s have less financial reason to stay in an unhappy marriage.
Many women are finding that, once the children are out of the house and living their own lives, they and their husbands grow apart. One Wellington, Florida, psychologist said that men tend to slow down as they age, while women become more active. With more time to enjoy themselves, many middle-aged women become frustrated by their husband's desire to take it easy.
These later-in-life changes can exacerbate old conflicts in the marriage and lead to divorce, even after decades together. As a Florida mental health counselor said, Baby Boomer women do not need to be married to feel fulfilled.
