CARY -- The largest school system in the state said North Carolina's current compromise budget amounts to about a $5.5 million funding cut for the Wake County Public School System.
The Wake County School Board was back to talking about its already-approved budget Tuesday.
They'll have to make some changes now that lawmakers are coming to a final agreement on the state budget, which does include additional funding for some things.
?I'm pleased to see the Republican budget put back in place some of the discretionary dollars that have been cut over the past four years,? said Republican school board member John Tedesco. ?[I'm] pleased to see they put money in place for an increase in school security, as that's been a topic we've talked about, and technology.?
But administrators said the overall impact to WCPSS is a $5.5 million funding cut.
?What is the signal, what is the message we're sending when our investment in our children and students is continuing to dwindle,? said Wake School Board Chair Keith Sutton. ?At some point, we've got to put our foot on the brake and say we've got to reverse this trend.?
In 2008, Wake County was spending $8,060 per student for education. In 2009, that number peaked at $8,220 per pupil.
But last year, per pupil spending was cut to just $7,649, a five percent drop over the past five years.
School leaders said their biggest concern with the budget cuts is how to keep it from hurting the classroom and costing jobs.
?We're going to do everything possible to be creative [with the budget],? explained WCPSS Chief Business Officer David Neter. ?We're going to be working very closely with our budget staff and seeing what we can do to arrive at something with the goal of not having reduction in force. But when you consider that 80 percent of a school's operating budget is people, it's probably going to be people [we have to cut.]?
WCPSS administrators hope to present their final budget recommendations to the school board Aug. 6.
