For Diabetics, a Steady Job is Good for Your Health

ANN ARBOR, Mich.--(ENEWSPF)--August 30, 2012. ?If you're diabetic or prone to diabetes, having a steady job appears to be good for your health, and not just because of the insurance coverage.

A new University of Michigan study found that that jobless working-age people with diabetes are less likely to adhere to their oral anti-diabetic medications than diabetics who are employed. Further, people of working age with diabetes are more likely to be unemployed than those who do not have diabetes.

The lack of a clear-cut, cause-and-effect relationship between insurance and medication adherence surprised lead researcher Rajesh Balkrishnan of the U-M College of Pharmacy and School of Public Health.

"Improved use of medications is more than just a facet of having medical insurance. It is linked to bigger issues such as being employed, periods of joblessness or a personal financial strain," said Balkrishnan, who believes that a healthier, active lifestyle and access to medical care resources through employers that want employees to remain productive play a big role in adherence.

Other factors that account for lack of medication adherence include lack of financial resources, stress due to unemployment and lack of access to health care.

Researchers looked at diabetes because it is one of the most commonly present chronic conditions in working-age adults in the United States, Balkrishnan said. And globally, diabetes is the seventh-leading cause of death and the eighth-most costly disease to treat. In 2007, total health care costs for diabetes were estimated at $174 billion.

Policy changes would help, Balkrishnan said.

"Workforce participation for adults with diabetes and other chronic conditions command the attention of public policymakers, particularly when prioritizing resource allocation," he said. "As a starting position, health care providers and systems need standard processes to identify individuals facing financial pressure and their vulnerability to lower medication adherence."

The study, "Associations between joblessness and oral anti-diabetic medication adherence in U.S. diabetic working-age adults," appears in the online journal Health Outcomes Research in Medicine.

Co-authors include Mary Davis-Ajami of the University of Maryland College of Nursing and Milap Nahata, Gregory Reardon and Eric Seiber of the Ohio State University College of Pharmacy.

First field study finds soot particles absorb significantly less sunlight than predicted by models

CHESTNUT HILL, MA (Aug. 31, 2012) Viewed as a potential target in the global effort to reduce climate change, atmospheric black carbon particles absorb significantly less sunlight than scientists predicted, raising new questions about the impact of black carbon on atmospheric warming, an international team of researchers, including climate chemists from Boston College, report today in the latest edition of the journal Science.

Mathematical models and laboratory experiments used to study airborne soot particles led to projections that the absorption-boosting chemicals that coat black carbon could yield an increase in absorption by as much as a factor of two. But field studies in smoggy California cities found black carbon absorption enhancements of just 6 percent, suggesting that climate models may be overestimating warming by black carbon, the researchers report.

The surprising results highlight the early challenges in a nascent sector of climate science and could have implications for regulatory efforts to reduce the production of black carbon, or soot, by curbing the burning of fossil fuels. Still, scientists agree that black carbon in the atmosphere has a significant effect on global and regional climate, with earlier studies ranking the warming effects of black carbon particles second only to carbon dioxide gas.

"The team's field measurements in California showed the enhancement of absorption was very small approximately six percent instead of by a factor of two," said Boston College Professor of Chemistry Paul Davidovits, an authority on airborne particles, known as aerosols. "In one respect, it shows that nature is much more complicated than our initial laboratory experiments and modeling indicated. Now we will try to unravel and understand that complexity."

The historic role of black carbon soot in climate change has been well documented by scientists, most notably in the study of ice samples taken from deep within glaciers. For the past several years, Davidovits has collaborated with Aerodyne Research Inc., and colleagues from universities and government labs in the U.S., Canada and Finland. Their research has focused on the chemical and optical properties of sub-micron airborne particles of black carbon produced by commercial and industrial activity.

Unlike carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses, which can survive in the atmosphere for decades and centuries, black carbon has a relatively short life span of approximately one to two weeks. Black carbon is part of a group of pollution sources known as Short-Lived Climate Forcers (SLCFs), including methane gas and ozone, which are produced on earth.

During their lifetime, black carbon particles are coated with airborne chemicals, which sophisticated laboratory tests have shown can act like lenses capable of increasing the ability of the particles to absorb sunlight and heat the atmosphere. That has raised a critical question as to whether targeting black carbon emissions in an effort to reduce climate change could yield relatively quick results on a regional or global level.

Led by principal investigators Christopher D. Cappa, a professor of engineering at the University of California, Davis, and Timothy B. Onasch, principal scientist at Aerodyne and an associate research professor of chemistry at Boston College, the team analyzed air samples near the California cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento.

Researchers tested air samples using a combination of real-time techniques, including aerosol mass spectrometry and photoacoustic spectroscopy. These techniques are capable of making measurements to determine the chemical, physical and optical properties of the black carbon particles, said Onasch, whose Billerica, MA-based company has developed the aerosol mass spectrometer instruments.

Onasch said the recent findings set the stage for further studies around the world under different atmospheric conditions in order to better understand how chemical coatings from a range of emission sources affect the absorptive properties of black carbon.

"When you put a soot particle into the atmosphere, we known it contains an elemental carbon component and we know what it's absorption will be based on mass and size," said Onasch. "But black carbon particles in the air are constantly changing. They collect inorganic and organic materials, they grow, change shapes, and change composition. These changes affect the absorption or warming capability of the black carbon. So the question remains: to what extent exactly?"

The recent findings only add to the challenge of understanding complex chemical activity in the atmosphere, said Davidovits, whose research is supported by the National Science Foundation's Atmospheric Chemistry division and the U.S. Department of Energy's Atmospheric System Research program.

"These findings do require us to reduce our projections about the amount of heating soot produces, at least under some experimental conditions. But the findings don't point to soot as being a harmless climate forcer," said Davidovits. "Soot remains an important climate heating agent, as well as a health problem that has been well documented."

Do You Find Plumbing Complicated? Use This Advice | Anthony ...

You are here: Home / Uncategorized / Do You Find Plumbing Complicated? Use This Advice

Problems with plumbing can cause problems in to home and also damage your belongings. Here are some tips to help you begin fixing whatever plumbing problems you may need help with.

Plumbing is more than dealing with water. There are other skills needed if you want to try out plumbing. Fixing water lines is a key part of plumbing, and requires a fair amount of knowledge to do correctly.

Don?t give a plumber the total bill payment upfront; pay them only when they have finished the job. You might have to give them a deposit, but do not give them the entire sum of money until you are sure they have done a good job. It is a good thing to know the plumber did his job as he agreed to before he get?s all of his money.

Don?t pour oils, grease or fat down the drain. When they cool, they?ll harden and clog your drain. This is especially true if you have a garbage disposal, as the fat will cause the blades to run slower and less efficiently. Get rid of any fat or oils outside or in the garbage can.

The flapper and flapper seat in your toilet tank, when damaged, worn or crusted with mineral build-up, allows water to keep running into the toilet bowl on a continuous basis, which drives up your water bills by a great deal. Replacing or cleaning the flapper and the flapper seat should solve your problem.

If you need plumbing fixtures, think seriously about brass. These are durable and last for a long time. Brass fixtures look a lot nicer than many of the other types of plumbing fixtures that you can purchase. You can find these in home improvement stores.

Do not tighten a pipe too much, this can be as bad as not tightening it. PVC and other plastic pipes have fragile threads that can be damaged when tightened too much, not to even mention that they can easily crack.

You can resolve most toilet clogs yourself. Try a plunger first. If plunging the toilet doesn?t seem to clear up a clog, check the toilet?s water level. If it?s too low, try filling a bucket with warm water. Open the toilet?s tank, and pour the water in. Do this as often as necessary if the water level dips back down again.

Problems with your plumbing can be a nuisance, but if you put in some patience and effort, they can be fixed. You just have to research this, and maybe ask a plumber for advice on how to repair it correctly. Apply the tips offered in this article and you can rid yourself of plumbing problems.

Biz Break: Wall Street falls, Google and Apple CEOs talk, Facebook revenue projection cut

Today: Stocks fall after days of stability, with Yelp losing some of its gains and Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) again hitting an eight-year low. Also: Apple (AAPL) and Google (GOOG) reportedly talking peace in patent wars, eMarketer lops $1 billion off Facebook revenue projection.

Wall Street falls ahead of Bernanke speech; tech stocks weak

After three days of barely budging, Wall Street plunged Thursday, as tech stocks showed weakness while investors waited for a highly anticipated speech by Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke. The tech-heavy Nasdaq fell more than 1 percent to lead the three major U.S. stock indexes, while the Dow Jones industrial average fell to its lowest level in nearly a month.

Trading was light as summer nears its traditional end with Labor Day weekend,

which could portend lots of movement in the future.

"There's so little going on, it's all wait and see before Bernanke's speech," Scott Freeze, president of Street One Financial, told the Associated Press. "I'm sure next week will be a much different scenario."

Bernanke is expected to speak Friday morning to bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyo., and some onlookers are concerned that the Fed chief could cause a sell-off in stocks if he doesn't signal more willingness to juice the economy with action.

"If (Bernanke) doesn't tip his hand, then the market is going down on the speech," Uri Landesman, president of hedge fund Platinum Partners, told Reuters. "I don't think the market hangs in around 1,400 if he doesn't say anything substantive."

Few expect Bernanke to go the route that would satisfy Wall Street, however, with most predicting the Fed chief to continue his route of saying that the Fed will only act if the U.S. economy gets worse.

"I think it will be more 'all of our options are on the table' talk -- I doubt he's going to tip his hand," Bill Stone, chief investment strategist at PNC's asset management group, told the Wall Street Journal.

While the U.S. economy is growing at a slow pace, it has not completely stagnated, which causes concern among the Fed but not enough to act. For instance, Thursday's weekly unemployment-benefit numbers did not change from the week before at 374,000 claims, reflecting a slow but not worsening job market. Jennifer Lee, senior economist with BMO Capital Markets, wrote that the numbers showed "the August payroll report is not going to look terribly inspirational."

In Silicon Valley, tech stocks fell even harder than the rest of the market, with the SV150 index of the area's largest tech companies declining 1.4 percent. Yelp gave back some of its gigantic gains from Wednesday, losing 3 percent off a bounce that many analysts credited to an unexpected "short-squeeze" following the end of the San Francisco company's post-IPO lockup for early investors. ?Hewlett-Packard hit an eight-year low for the third time this week, falling as low as $16.77 and closing at $16.78 despite unveiling the company's first touch-screen laptops with Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system.

Solar companies were extremely weak in Thursday trading, as Chinese companies cut their yearly expectations, leading investors to dump U.S. companies. San Jose's SunPower (SPWRA) dropped 8.1 percent, and U.S. leader First Solar fell 18.7 percent.

Networking stocks headed down as Ciena, an East Coast networking equipment maker, released weak earnings and softened its outlook. Juniper was the hardest hit Silicon Valley networking company, falling 4 percent, while Cisco (CSCO) dropped 1.6 percent; Ciena declined 19.5 percent.

On the positive side, Oakland-based Pandora surged 14.3 percent after announcing strong earnings and an increased forecast in a Wednesday earnings report, and Electronic Arts (ERTS) gained 1.2 percent after obtaining a $500 million line of credit.

Apple and Google CEOs discussing patent detente, according to reports

In a surprising development, reports surfaced Thursday that Apple and Google were discussing their patent issues, despite late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs saying the company would go "thermonuclear" on the search giant because he believed the Android mobile operating system was copying Apple's iOS.

Reuters and Bloomberg News reported Thursday that the two companies' CEOs, Tim Cook and Larry Page, have discussed the intellectual property issues and will continue their talks. Other executives at the two companies are also engaged in discussions on the issue, according to the reports.

The issue was pushed to the front of the tech industry last week, when Apple defeated Samsung in a San Jose court battle -- Samsung's phones and tablets, which run on Android, were found to infringe on patents Apple owns for the iPhone and iPad. Bloomberg reported that Apple considered suing Google directly before aiming for hardware manufacturers with a series of lawsuits around the globe.

Apple stock fell for the third consecutive day since hitting records in the wake of the Samsung decision, with Thursday's decline being the largest of the three at 1.4 percent. Google stock, which declined Monday after the decision but gained the next two days, also fell Thursday, by 0.9 percent.

Facebook to earn $1 billion less than earlier expected this year, report says

Facebook opened higher Thursday but fell to a one-cent loss after eMarketer reported that the company's revenues will not grow by as much as previously calculated.

The market research firm reported Thursday that previous sales projections were off by more than $1 billion, reducing this year's projected revenues from $6.1 billion to $5.04 billion. The Menlo Park social network's core advertising business will not grow by as much as expected, according to the report.

"There is still hesitation about the effectiveness of the advertising, about how much the advertising is worth," Debra Aho Williamson, an EMarketer analyst, told Bloomberg News.

The Yeshiva World Kirk, Gillibrand Disappointed in Ban Ki-moon's ...

Yesterday U.S. Senators Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) wrote to the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to express disappointment in his attendance at the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in Tehran, Iran. The Senators argued that the Secretary-General?s attendance further legitimizes the Iranian regime, while Tehran continues to sponsor terrorism, pursue an illicit nuclear program, threaten Israel?s existence, and deny basic rights and freedoms to its own citizens.

The Senators urged the Secretary-General to directly confront the Iranian authorities regarding their systematic persecution of human rights defenders, religious minorities, and pro-democracy leaders in the country and demand that the regime immediately release all political prisoners.

?The human rights situation in Iran has deteriorated significantly since the fraudulent 2009 elections,? the Senators wrote. ?We urge you to raise Iran?s atrocious human rights record directly with its leadership and publicly pressure Tehran?s leaders to uphold their international obligations and release all political prisoners.?

Senators Kirk and Gillibrand have consistently led the call for the Iranian regime to end the gross violations of its citizens? human rights. In March 2011, the Senators introduced the Iran Human Rights and Democracy Promotion Act, which would impose sanctions against those engaged in human rights abuses against the Iranian people. In July 2012, the Senate passed the Iran Threat Reduction and Syria Human Rights Act of 2012, which incorporated key provisions of the Kirk-Gillibrand legislation.

The full text of the letter can be found below. A PDF of the letter can be found here.

Dear Mr. Secretary-General:

We write to convey our disappointment with your decision to attend this week?s Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in Tehran. We believe your attendance at the summit will only serve to legitimize a regime that is the world?s greatest state sponsor of terrorism and that is pursuing an illicit nuclear weapons program in contravention of numerous UN Security Council resolutions, and whose leader just this month has called for the annihilation of the State of Israel, the latest in a series of similar statements.

As you know, the Iranian regime also continually denies the Iranian people their basic rights and freedoms. The human rights situation in Iran has deteriorated significantly since the fraudulent 2009 elections. In February 2012, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/175, which highlighted the regime?s continuing and systematic targeting of human rights defenders, gender inequality and violence against women, as well as ?[i]ncreased persecution and human rights violations against persons belonging to unrecognized religious minorities, particularly members of the Baha?i faith.?

During your visit, we urge you to raise Iran?s atrocious human rights record directly with its leadership and publicly pressure Tehran?s leaders to uphold their international obligations and release all political prisoners, as called for in Resolution 66/175. We also urge you to meet with prominent members of the Green Movement and the families of imprisoned human rights defenders, including those of the seven Baha?i leaders (?the Yaran?).

We ask that you communicate to Iran?s leaders that the international community will not allow the people of Iran to be harassed, detained, and tortured by their government.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Logitech's UE Smart Radio, Boombox, and Mobile Boombox give you wireless audio on the go (hands-on)

Logitech's UE Smart Radio, Boombox, and Mobile Boombox give you wireless audio on the go

In addition to producing a slew of new headphones, Logitech's latest collaboration with Ultimate Ears has produced a pair of Bluetooth speakers and a Smart Radio. The UE Smart Radio comes equipped with 802.11b/g WiFi on board to pull audio from directly from the likes of Spotify and Pandora or from local sources like Mac, PC, iOS or Android devices. A 2.4-inch LCD is on the front, along with the usual audio controls, plus there are six preset buttons that can be programmed to easily access playlists from myriad locales. It's also got a rechargeable battery, good for a claimed six hours of playback, and will set you back $180 when it goes on sale next month.

Logitech's UE Mobile Boombox replaces the firm's Mini Boombox, but keeps its $100 price. It comes in five colors (red, yellow, blue, white and black) and can both stream your tunes via Bluetooth and serve as a speakerphone using its omni-directional mic. You can pair up to eight devices with the Mobile Boombox, and its rechargeable battery promises up to ten hours of listening pleasure. In our brief ears-on, we found it offered clear sound, though unsurprisingly, it struggled to pump out much bass. That said, we really liked its solid rubber construction, and can see it holding up well to abuse. Its big brother, the $250 UE Boombox, has much better low-end response and a fuller sound generally thanks to its eight drivers. Like the Mini, it also can pair with eight devices and has a rechargeable battery, though it promises only six hours of audio. We really dig its cast aluminum chassis and clean lines, and the handle on top begs to be used in old-school fashion -- with the Boombox propped up on your shoulder bumping some choice hip-hop. Both of these Bluetooth speakers start shipping this month, and our friends in grand Europa get them in September.

Georges St-Pierre says he?s medically cleared to fight

The UFC welterweight champion is now cleared to compete. Georges St-Pierre shared the good news on his Facebook page.

Yesterday was the final chapter of my Road to Recovery- I'm now medically cleared to compete in professional mixed martial arts! Big thanks to all my fans for the amazing support during those 9 long months of rehab- couldn't have done it without you.

St-Pierre tore his ACL while preparing for a bout with Carlos Condit. While GSP rehabbed, Condit fought Nick Diaz for the interim welterweight belt. Condit won with a tight decision. Since he was not given a chance to defend the interim belt, it turned out to be just a really shiny, kind of heavy reminder of Condit's No. 1 contender status.

The two are slated to fight at UFC 154 in Montreal. GSP's last fight was on April 30, 2011, against Jake Shields. By the time he fights on Nov. 17, St-Pierre will have had 572 days off between fights.

Will the time off affect GSP or will he pick up where he left off? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Lundbeck says cancer drug approved in Canada

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Some two dozen topless women protested in a New York City park on a hot, sweaty Sunday as part of what they called "National Go-Topless Day" to draw attention to inequality in topless rights between men and women. There were topless men in the park, too, but nobody paid them much attention, a disparity, organizers said, that demonstrated the need for the event. The topless women drew crowds of onlookers who took pictures and video with their cell phones. ...

Parenting Tips: Establishing Consequences with Bite - Matt Townsend

    Hey Friends, ? ?

    Nothing is more frustrating as a parent than knowing that your children aren?t taking you or your disciplining approach seriously. ?Like a cat with a cornered mouse our kids seem to taunt us at times, daring us to discipline them. ?They seem confident by the fact that most of us parents really don?t know what we?re doing nor do we have the stamina or will to keep up with them. ?In order to improve our relationships as parents and to make sure that our discipline can create the results both the parents and children need I?ve put together a few rules to help us along the way.? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?Recognize Who Is the Real Discipline Problem

Most of us that struggle disciplining our children, lack discipline ourselves.? By not having the discipline to discipline, we don?t allow our children to suffer their own consequences.? We become too protective and actually incubate our child from the real trials and realities of life.? Most of us as parents feel like we?re helping the child by protecting them from life, but in reality we?re only making them softer until they have to learn the lesson at another part of their life.? There is a fine balance between mercy and justice that must learn to be walked by every parent in order to create healthier children.

Tool: ?Ask yourself the question?Do you possess the discipline to effectively discipline your children? ?What can you do today to become more disciplined in your ability to discipline your children??

    ?

Discipline for Growth, Not for ?Gotcha?

In order for discipline to be truly effective, we should always remember the reason we are disciplining our child in the first place. Is our discipline designed to punish your child for their past behavior or prepare them for a healthier future?? When it comes to your discipline, do you do it more with a spirit of growth or ?gotcha?? ?When our children sense that our purpose for disciplining them is out of our love and desire for them to live a healthier more productive life, then our discipline doesn?t need to seem personal.? We really can just let the consequences of their actions be the teacher, instead of your punitive punishments. This spirit eliminates the competition that can arise between parent and child and open the child up to being more teachable and willing to see that their discipline is good for them.

Tool: ?Ask yourself the question? Are you punishing to ?get them? or our of retribution, or in the moment are you actually trying to enable growth? ?Would three other witnesses in the room agree with you based on your approach, tone and style?

    ?

Lead with the Principle Not the Punishment ?

We have gotten away from the ?law of the harvest? that every farmer on earth had to learn to survive.? The idea that you ?reap what you sow? or that you can really only expect to harvest in fall what you planted in the spring.? Inherent in every moment of discipline are principles that will govern the process.? One key to creating healthy consequences is to make sure that you personally understand the principle behind the lesson you are trying to teach.? For example, let?s say that after your child returns from school, you hear he had been calling another child names and disrespecting her on the way home from school.? That child?s mother has called you to inform you of his behavior.? So when your child walks in the house, what do you do?? If all of our consequences should flow from our principles, then don?t we need to first establish what principles have been violated?? Instead of taking all of your negative energy from being humiliated about your son?s behavior and starting the punishment process, I would suggest we clearly identify one principle that we would want to work on.? Is your problem with your son?s behavior that he was disrespectful, and you want to help him be more respectful?? Or was it that he was too reactive and you want him to be more in control of his emotions?? You must first figure that out in order to know how you would like to discipline the boy.? By clearly seeing that it was a violation of respect and control, you would probably want to choose consequences that are more likely to grow respect and control.? Instead however, when we don?t know the principle we?re trying to improve, we usually end up losing our own control and being disrespectful to our own child by yelling, spanking and grounding them for their behavior.

Tool: ?Identify the real principle behind each punishment before moving into the punishment phase. ?Let the principle guide the punishment, not your emotion.

    ?

Let Your Child Pick Their Poison

Once we?ve decided what principles were violated by your child, and we really want to create more growth than ?Gotcha?, then we can brainstorm with our child about how they can learn to improve the principle they have violated.? For example, when we understand that our child violated the principle of respect and control, then you can begin to brainstorm ways with your child to improve their ability to better respect others and grow their self-control.? The most valuable part of this part of setting the consequences is the actual conversation and negotiation that will take place between the two of you.? Invite your child to come up with some ways that they can now go and show respect for the girl and the family that he had offended.? Offer your suggestions and invite suggestions from him.? For example, you could suggest that he go over to the family and apologize to the girl and her parents.? Perhaps he could write a letter of apology to the girl and could spend some time alone learning about the impact of respecting other people.? In the end, the forms of discipline are not as critical as the fact that you and your child are actually focusing on the principle that was violated.? Continue with your list until you have enough options that would create real growth for your child in the principle.? This process can also prove valuable for preventative discipline on issues that have been problems in the past and you are trying to set consequences proactively. Once the possible solutions are listed, then let your child pick which of the approaches they most want to complete.? Interestingly, when you are creating consequences for potential or future problems, your child will usually pick consequences that are more severe or strict than you ever would.? That is how you put the teeth in the consequence, simply by letting them set the bar for themselves.? They also are much more inclined to follow a consequence that they created than one you created.

Tools: ?Brainstorm ways or consequences for your child based on the principle that they violated. ?Allow your child to come up with consequences as well and then allow your child to pick the their own consequences based upon your brainstorm list. ?This approach works incredibly well with problems you want to stop in the future as well.

    ?

    Reinforce Your Relationship With Love

In the end, we must remember that our primary purpose for disciplining our children is because we love them.? To discipline our children without them feeling some sense of love will leave the message only partially delivered.? Our children want to please us and they want to improve their lives.? The best conditions for growth and discipline in children will be to have a loving family who is by their side, no matter how they perform.? Our unconditional love in the end is nothing more than us modeling a principle and consequence.? Our love ends up being a lesson that they will never forget.

Tool: ?Always reinforce your child with love, showing him/her that no matter what your love will be their in an unconditional way. ?Allow your love to be the governing principle of all of your discipline.

    ?

In the end, you discipline because you care and always remember that they care as well. ?Let?s just not let our lack of discipline destroy our discipline.

Kalyn's Kitchen: Recipe for Vegetarian Stuffed Zucchini with Brown ...

My garden is still supplying me with zucchini at a pretty regular pace, so recently I decided a new version of stuffed zucchini should be on the menu.? I had some Cotija cheese that was left from a dish my brother Rand had made when he was visiting, so I guess that's what inspired me to go with a Mexican-themed version of stuffed zucchini this time.? If you're not familiar with it, Cotija is a type of hard, crumbly Mexican cheese.? It made a nice topping for these Vegetarian Stuffed Zucchinis with Brown Rice, Black Beans, Green Chiles, and Cheese, but if you don't have it you could use Parmesan, Feta, and or even a little more of the cheese blend that's used in the stuffing.

I used some of those adorable little round 8-Ball Zucchinis that I love so much, but if you don't have those, use a larger zucchini cut in chunks and then scooped out to make zucchini "cups."? The first time I made these the cheese got too brown and the zucchini wasn't quite as tender as I wanted it, so Jake and I came up with the idea of cooking the stuffed zucchinis covered for the first 20 minutes and then taking the foil off for another 30 minutes cooking time.? That time we thought they were perfect, and just right for a Meatless Monday meal! ? (You can find more meatless recipes by using the label Meatless Monday or checking Vegetarian Recipes in the recipe index, and I'm also doing a meatless slow cooker recipe each Monday on Slow Cooker from Scratch.? For more Meatless Monday ideas from other bloggers, check Meatless Monday at BlogHer, where I write a weekly post spotlighting one of the fabulous meatless recipe ideas I find around the web.)

Drain a can of black beans into a colander, rinse with cold water, and let them drain while you prep the zucchini.

I used half 8-Ball Zucchinis (on the right) and half large zucchinis cut into 3 inch pieces (on the left).

Use a small sharp spoon or a melon baller to scoop out the flesh of the zucchini, leaving a thin layer of zucchini flesh next to the skin.? (I didn't use the zucchini pulp that I scooped out, but you could use it if you were short on rice.)

Thinly slice enough green onions to make one cup and drain a can of diced green chiles. To make the filling, mix together cooked brown rice, sour cream, sliced green onions, black beans, low-fat Mexican cheese blend, and green chiles.? You can add a little Green Tabasco Sauce if you want to make it a bit spicier.? (We did.)

Use a spoon to fill with zucchini with the stuffing mixture, pressing it down so it's tightly filling the inside of the zucchini.

Cover the dish and bake the filled zucchinis for 20 minutes at 350F/180C.

Then remove the foil and use a spoon to press about a few teaspoons of Cotija cheese (or other cheese of your choice) on to the top of the zucchini.

Bake about 30 minutes more, or until the filling is bubbling hot and the cheese is nicely browned.? Serve hot. Vegetarian Stuffed Zucchini with Brown Rice, Black Beans, Chiles, Cheddar, and Cotija Cheese
(Makes 6-8 servings; recipe created by Kalyn.)

    Ingredients:
8 small or 6 medium-sized 8-Ball zucchinis (or use larger long zucchinis, cut in 3 inch lengths and hollowed out to make zucchini "cups")
about 1/4 cup crumbled Cotija cheese (or other grated cheese of your choice)

    Stuffing Ingredients:
1 can (15 oz.) black beans, rinsed and drained
1 cup thinly sliced green onions
1 can (4 oz.) diced green chiles, drained (Anaheim chiles, not jalapenos)
2 cups cooked brown or white long-grain rice (use brown rice or Uncle Ben's Converted Rice for South Beach Diet)
    1/2 cup light sour cream
    1 cup low-fat Mexican 4-Cheese blend
1-2 T? Green Tabasco Sauce (optional; taste the filling and see if you'd like a little more heat)

    Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 350F/180C.? Spray a baking dish with olive oil or nonstick spray.? (Use a dish that holds the zucchini without letting them move around too much if you can.)

Drain the black beans into a colander placed in the sink and rinse with cold water until no more foam appears.? Let the beans drain while you prepare the zucchini.? If you don't have enough 8-Ball zucchini, cut a large long zucchini into 3 inch lengths.? Then use a melon baller or a sharp spoon to scoop out the inside of the zucchini, leaving a thin layer of flesh next to the skin.? Slice green onions and drain the can of diced green chiles.

Blot the beans dry with paper towels if they are still wet.? In a medium-sized bowl, mix together the black beans, sliced green onions, diced green chiles, cooked rice, sour cream, and low-fat cheese.? Gently mix to combine, then taste the mixture and see if you want to add the optional Green Tabasco Sauce. (We did, but we weren't making it for kids.)

Arrange the zucchini in the baking pan.? Use a spoon to fill each zucchini ball or cup with the stuffing mixture, pressing it down so the inside of the zucchini is tightly packed with stuffing.? Cover the dish and bake for 20 minutes.

After 20 minutes, take zucchini out of the oven, remove the foil, and use a spoon to carefully press about 2 tsp. crumbled Cotija cheese (or other cheese of your choice) on to the top of each zucchini.? Put the zucchinis back into the oven and cook about 30 minutes more, or until zucchini is tender, stuffing is bubbling hot, and the cheese on top is nicely browned.? Serve hot.

These will keep in the refrigerator for a day or two and they can be reheated in the microwave or in a toaster oven.

WE have spent our careers as filmmakers making the case that the news media in the United States often fail to inform Americans about the uglier actions of our own government. We therefore have been deeply grateful for the accomplishments of WikiLeaks, and applaud Ecuador?s decision to grant diplomatic asylum to its founder, Julian Assange, who is now living in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London.??

Ecuador has acted in accordance with important principles of international human rights. Indeed, nothing could demonstrate the appropriateness of Ecuador?s action more than the British government?s threat to violate a sacrosanct principle of diplomatic relations and invade the embassy to arrest Mr. Assange.

Since WikiLeaks? founding, it has revealed the ?Collateral Murder? footage that shows the seemingly indiscriminate killing of Baghdad civilians by a United States Apache attack helicopter; further fine-grained detail about the true face of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars; United States collusion with Yemen?s dictatorship to conceal our responsibility for bombing strikes there; the Obama administration?s pressure on other nations not to prosecute Bush-era officials for torture; and much more.

Predictably, the response from those who would prefer that Americans remain in the dark has been ferocious. Top elected leaders from both parties have called Mr. Assange a ?high-tech terrorist.? And Senator Dianne Feinstein, the California Democrat who leads the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, has demanded that he be prosecuted under the Espionage Act. Most Americans, Britons and Swedes are unaware that Sweden has not formally charged Mr. Assange with any crime. Rather, it has issued a warrant for his arrest to question him about allegations of sexual assault in 2010.

All such allegations must be thoroughly investigated before Mr. Assange moves to a country that might put him beyond the reach of the Swedish justice system. But it is the British and Swedish governments that stand in the way of an investigation, not Mr. Assange ? //

? We urge the people of Britain and Sweden to demand that their governments answer some basic questions: Why do the Swedish authorities refuse to question Mr. Assange in London? And why can neither government promise that Mr. Assange will not be extradited to the United States? The citizens of Britain and Sweden have a rare opportunity to make a stand for free speech on behalf of the entire globe.

    Standardized testing--good, bad, or...?

    • What purpose should standardized tests have?
Depends on the purpose of learning. Is the purpose to learn to be something quantified and easily measurable or is the purpose to learn to support creativity and critical thinking? Standardized tests provide with the former but not necessarily the latter. If they did the latter, they would not be considered standardized, since there would be no way you could compare test results across platforms. You know, I recall sitting a standardised test that was meant to see which children were particularly gifted, to allow them to engage in special programs that the schools were running. Most of test questions were the usual kind of stuff, like the IQ test style mathematical Q's, where all students would be given a limited amount of time to figure out which object out of five was different if you were to rotate them, stuff like that. But then there was also a question where we were given a number of half-completed shapes on a page, and asked to draw, to turn them into objects however we liked. I recall I turned them into Pokemon and may or may not have scored well as a result I recall for the final section, we were asked to write a short story, and where probably graded on how creative we were. Other standardized tests, however, would purely test maths, science, or literary skills. So really: it depends what you want to test. A kid could go through their whole schooling life thinking that they're an idiot if they were only ever given one kind of test, when they could have gone well in another. If a kid were to flunk the test I just described though, they'd know themselves to not be much of an all-rounder.
    • How fair is standardized testing?
What is fair? See the above. Standardized tests assume that we are all equally good at the same thing or possess knowledge and the capability to do the same thing equally well, and if we don't, this ability can be practiced. I am not so sure this is the case. I am going to cross-reference to the MBTI system because this highlights what I am trying to say quite well. When it comes to standardized tests, the STJ types and to a degree NTJ types will most likely have the easiest time scoring well. NTPs, especially ENTPs, can probably wiggle their way around with dominant Ne intuiting the right answer. For me being an INTP however, I find standardized tests awful. They do not show my real strength as a person, as they force me to engage with functions that are not my dominant ones (Si and Te compared to Ne and Ti). Give me a problem that I must sovle and I will do it. I will provide with an extremely rational line of reasoning why my solution is the best, but trying to remember the different cities in Argentina will never work for me. Si is not one of my stronger functions. Do note that the STJ will have problems with tests that require independent and critical thinking though, while this is my personal forte.

This is why standardized tests cannot be fair because it ignores that people have different strengths and weaknesses.

I can see this becoming the most debated point

Here's the thing: if the standardised test was, say, one testing memory, and every kid was given a list of items that they would have 1 minute to look at, and then a following 5 minutes to recall and write down: I wouldn't call that "unfair on the kids with bad memory", because exposing their weakness was the entire point of the exercise. As appallingly mean as that might sound, standardized tests aren't necessarily all about seeing how kids can shine. Aren't they mainly about seeing precisely where they fall down?

I've got no idea how if fit into the MBTI system, but I suppose I can relate to your point. For one thing, people in our culture who've learnt all manner of unnecessary facts might seem smart, but I don't think that's necessarily the case. I'd like to say that anyone is capable of gaining general knowledge, and the ones who have gone ahead and overdone it probably aren't the brightest, because no one needs to know all the names of the different rivers in Australia

But on a more personal note, the kinds of questions that get to me are the kind found in IQ tests. Never actually sat one, but you know the kind. They all strike me as purely mathematical. In trying to answer them, I noticed that all the questions were forcing me to use a part of my brain that I never use, which I call "my mathematical part". At no point was I able to draw upon other parts of my brain or knowledge to answer them. But worst of all, I realized that IQ tests are like a kind of game where, once you have the language of how they work down pat, you'll know how to play it and score well. But I don't know the language. I don't know the rules of the game. I'm fantastic in my own habitus where I know precisely what is expected (in the same way I'm sure you know exactly what to do to excel in anthropology) but I'd have to take some time to learn how to go well at the IQ-style Q's. Currently, I'd flunk. Get a perfect zero. But maybe I'm not going to say that's unfair. The kids who managed to learn what to do early on probably deserve their good marks. It only becomes unfair when someone undeserving get the label of "retard" or "genius" pegged on to them later. It's unfair if our culture only places value on one kind of intellectual ability
