jonescene: Temporality and Femininity

I just started watching Rizzoli and Isles in preparation for my "Cops and Courts" class and quickly became intrigued by the ways that the characterizations of the two leads, Jane Rizzoli (Angie Harmon) and Maura Isles (Sasha Alexander), express issues of gender and time. Connections between gender and time have been a growing interest for me over the past few years, something I've noticed but not yet dug into deeply enough to take further than discussions and outlines. Maybe with Rizzoli and Isles, I'll be able to take the ideas a little bit futher into the classroom, perhaps with a focus on gender, space, and place in televisual legal mystery.

So here's what I'm noticing so far in this series. Both characters have profound relationships with the past, but struggle with the present and future. Jane is depicted in a kind of suspended adolescence, a tomboy who may be attracted to men but also identifies more with masculinity than femininity. Nonethless, her relationship with masculinity is as complicated as her relationship with femininity. For example, in the first episode of the second season, she doesn't want to put on her cop uniform for her own award ceremony because it makes her look like a man. However, her normal detective uniform is a mix-and-match pantsuit, different mostly in color and fit than a regular cop uniform but not necessarily different in kind. Along with this tomboy identity, her family and friendship connections also keep her in the past. Her family, effectively headed by her mother Angela (Lorraine Bracco), is a constant and aggravating presence for her, especially since her mother tries to control her life and personal relationships, again like a child. Rizzoli maintains a competitive and teasing relationship with her younger brother Frankie Jr. (Jordan Bridges), who is also a police officer and tags after her with adulation like a kid. Her friendships are another part of this connection to the past, as old acquaintances keep popping up and interfering with both her personal and professional lives. One example from the first season is Joey Grant (Donnie Wahlberg), a fellow detective who moves from the narcotics division to become Rizzoli's commanding officer in homicide and also happens to be a childhood nemesis from both church and school. Furthermore, cases from her past keep cropping up to haunt her. In the premiere episode, she's tormented by a previous case, when the work of the Surgeon, an incarcerated Hannibal Lecter-type, reappears through an accomplice and then continues through his escape. Cases from the past also seem to reappear continually in the series, as the second episode also covers a copycat (or maybe a continuation?) of the Boston Strangler cases from the sixties, and the start of the second season also revisits the continuing impact of the final case of the previous season on Rizzoli and her ability to do her job.

Isles also has an interesting relationship with the past in her role as the coroner. Working with dead bodies, she is constantly in the company of those who have "passed", even preferring them to those currently present. As she explains in the second episode of the first season, she had to go through an immersion therapy experience to get over her fear of the living. The body of knowledge that she brings to her work is also based on a mastery of the work that came before her. She lives in the present through what she learns from those who have "passed" and can therefore add to that previous "body of knowledge". In contrast to Rizzoli though, Isles has a "present tense" relationship to her femininity, where her gender expression seems to properly match her age and stage of personal development. Specifically, in terms of clothes, she wears what would be expected as a norm for women in their thirties with her level of education, professional achievement, and income, specifically high-end fashionable items like Birkin bags, plus tasteful jewelry and heels that seem like they could be from major label designers. However, she also looks so polished and perfect as to be a "girly-girl", a youthful excessively feminine style that seems to contrast with the masculine mastery and messiness of her chosen career. As Rizzoli asks her in the premiere episode, "Why do you always look like you're going to a photoshoot?" Along with this parallel relationship between fashion and gender development, Isles' lack of familial or friendship connections also seems to keep her in a constant present. Unlike Rizzoli (so far: I've only seen three episodes), she seems to have no present--in time or in place--family relationships, and she claims to have had no real friends from her past. This lack of connection to the past aside from the dead gives her a sense of the uncanny. This relationship to the dead also connects Isles to the future, as death is always lurking out there for everyone.

While death may be a part of everyone's future--and certainly has its relationship to the regeneration of life--the futurity of both Rizzoli and Isles is constantly in question due to their troubled relationships with men. Neither seems to be able to maintain a consistent heteronormative connection, something that Rizzoli's mother Angela certainly never lets her forget. However, the inability to maintain these straight relationships are also part of what keep leading them back to each other as their primary, equally matched and complentary relationships with another person, a source of the popular queer readings of their characters. As Dorothy Snarker explains in AFTER ELLEN,

"News Flash: Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles are not gay. They?re outstanding heterosexuals who just happen to flirt, sleep in the same bed, touch each other gratuitously, look deeply into each other?s eyes and have crazy, crazy chemistry while not maintaining any long-standing or significant romances with members of the opposite sex...."

I just noticed that Rizzoli and Isles is also taken from a book series, so maybe this is a show that will allow the class to also talk about adaptation as well. I'm also curious to see how place plays out. Boston doesn't seem as present as it should so far, aside from a few light touches in the score and inserts. I look forward to continuing to see how the show develops over the two seasons, whether it fulfills any of my aforementioned points or not.

Business travellers want to be protected against airline insolvency

Friday, March 30, 2012

Repatriation and reimbursement in case of airline insolvency is important for 86% of business travellers, according to a survey carried out by GEBTA.?

When an airline ceases operating, passengers with standalone tickets have no recourse against the airline to recover the money of their unused ticket or to obtain repatriation if they are stranded abroad, be they business or leisure travellers. The recent failures of the airlines Spanair and Malev were a painful reminder that all passengers are badly hit in case an airline becomes insolvent.

This is an issue of concern for business travellers. According to a survey carried out by GEBTA, the benefit of reimbursement and repatriation would be very important for 67% of business travellers and rather important for 19%, amounting to 86% of business travellers considering it important.

The concerns of business travellers go to the extent that 62% of the respondents would find worth paying 1 euros per air ticket to ensure repatriation or reimbursement in case an airline becomes bankrupt.

These findings are significant at a time when the European Commission is studying policy options to address passenger protection in case of airline failure. It commissioned a study in 2011 which has determined that a compulsory protection system would be feasible and the most effective option to protect passengers. But the European Commission is not excluding a voluntary scheme instead.

Said the Secretary General of GEBTA, Mr. Michel de Blust: "The lack of passenger protection in case of airline failure must not be underestimated by European Institutions. It is urgent that the European Commission initiates a compulsory system obliging airlines to protect all passengers in case an airline ceases operating."

'Thank God, he was there': JetBlue co-pilot an unlikely hero

A federal criminal complaint alleges that JetBlue captain Clayton Osbon told his first officer, "we need to take a leap of faith." NBC's Tom Costello reports.

By msnbc.com news services

In the wake of JetBlue captain?Clayton Osbon's?mid-air meltdown on Tuesday, many are calling first officer Jason Dowd, the?co-pilot of flight 191, a hero.

Pilots train for a range of in-flight mishaps including sick passengers, emergency landings and terrorist attacks, the Associated Press reports. But Dowd faced the rarest of scenarios: deciding whether to lock his incapacitated captain out of the cockpit and make an emergency landing after Osbon began exhibiting bizarre behavior.

Osbon, 49, is charged with interfering with a flight crew and, if convicted, could face 20 years in prison.

According to court documents,?Dowd was "really worried" when Osbon told him "we need to take a leap of faith." Concerned about Osbon's behavior, Dowd suggested that they invite an off-duty JetBlue captain who was flying as a passenger to come into the cockpit

Instead, witness accounts describe Osbon telling his co-pilot "things just don't matter" and sprinting down the center aisle ? yelling jumbled remarks about Sept. 11 and Iran.

The off-duty captain then joined Dowd, and from inside the locked cockpit, which Osbon tried to re-enter by banging on the door, the co-pilot gave an order through the intercom to restrain Osbon, according to the documents, which don't mention Dowd by name.?

Clayton Osbon, who had been flying for nearly 25 years, allegedly began yelling at air traffic controllers and later ran toward the cockpit door after getting locked out. He has been charged with interfering with a flight crew. NBC's Tom Costello reports.

The New York to Las Vegas flight was diverted to Amarillo, Texas, and Dowd safely landed the plane.?

Dowd, an Ohio native who still lives in his hometown of Salem,?is staying out of the public eye for now, but a wave of overnight fame ? much like 'Miracle on the Hudson' Capt. Chesley Sullenberger ? likely awaits. JetBlue says the decision on whether to go public is up to him, but they're not commenting more out of respect for his privacy.

JetBlue has praised Dowd's actions,?along with crew members and an off-duty pilot who stepped in to assist.

"Knowing my son, he would think that he's not a hero. He just did what he was paid to do," Dowd's mother, Jean Beatrice Dowd, told CNN.

"That's just his job, and he loves his job. He's just a quiet man."

His mother-in-law Ruth Ann Kostal said Thursday that Dowd doesn't think he's a hero, but she's not surprised he acted cool under pressure.

"I'm glad for those people he was the co-pilot that day," Kostal said. "Thank God, he was there."

Dowd hasn't been able to come home yet because he's still being interviewed by federal authorities in New York, Kostal said. He has made no public comments about Tuesday's flight.

?Passengers, including those who helped restrain Osbon, also credit Dowd for landing their plane safely.

"I think the co-pilot is really the hero here," passenger Tony Antolino told TODAY. "He had the instincts to recognize that something was going horribly wrong in the cockpit."

David Gonzalez, a 50-year-old former New York corrections office from Tannersville, Pa., who helped tackle Osbon, credits Dowd for getting the captain out of the cockpit and locking the door so he couldn't get back in.

"It's because of his actions that we're here," Gonzalez said of Dowd.

?Public relations experts say there are big pros and cons to going public, like what "Sully" and his co-captain Jeff Skiles experienced in the aftermath of their emergency landing in the Hudson River.?

"For some folks it's a lot to deal with ? especially all at once," said Dr. Ron Bishop, a professor of culture and communication at Drexel University in Philadelphia. "It seems given all the outlets and different means in which we communicate, the attention paid to a person in that situation is ramped up considerably."?

David E. Johnson, CEO of Strategic Vision, LLC, a leading public relations agency, said if Dowd comes forward, it would likely give JetBlue a needed public relations boost.

"JetBlue needs someone to really step the forefront. It's the second person there that's gone berserk they need to show that they've got good and heroic employees," he said.

In 2010, JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater pulled the emergency chute on a flight after it landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport. He went on the public-address system, swore at a passenger, grabbed a beer and slid down onto the tarmac. He was sentenced to probation, counseling and substance abuse treatment for attempted criminal mischief.

As much as JetBlue likely wants to put Slater's and Osbon's outbursts behind them, Johnson said there's another reason why Dowd may not want to go public.

"He's probably just very low key and just thinks he did what he was supposed to do," Johnson said.?

Information from NBC News and the Associated Press was included in this report.

Man City motivated to beat Sunderland

By STUART CONDIE

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:14 a.m. ET March 30, 2012

LONDON (AP) -Manchester City has plenty of additional motivation to beat Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday.

Victory would put leader Manchester United under pressure, pay Sunderland back for what was only its second Premier League defeat of the season and give one player the pleasure of beating his hometown club.

Sunderland-born England winger Adam Johnson played the entire game at the Stadium of Light in January, so he was on the field to see Ji Dong-won score a last-minute winner in a match City had dominated.

"That defeat was hard to take because we played really well, dominated the match but the ball just wouldn't go in the net for us," Johnson said. "I don't think they had any shots of note during the game and then they nick it right at the death, so that's certainly in the back of our minds going into this game."

With defending champion United not in action until it plays Blackburn on Monday, City can draw level on points at the top of the table if it beats the Black Cats.

City slipped slightly further behind United last weekend with a 1-1 draw against Stoke but has won a Premier League-record 20 straight games at home and is a strong favorite to beat a side resurgent under manager Martin O'Neill.

"I'm sure they won't be looking forward to coming to our ground," said Johnson, who is close friends with Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole. "We've been fantastic on our own patch and we feel we can beat anyone, so we'll be looking to make it 21 Premier League wins in a row against them."

While Johnson is in contention to start, City striker Sergio Aguero is out with a foot injury. Manager Roberto Mancini would not say what the injury was and raised the prospect that it was self-inflicted or sustained in an accident by stating only that it was "stupid."

Aguero's absence could give Carlos Tevez the chance to start a match for the first time since Sept. 10. The Argentina striker has made three substitute appearances since returning from an unsanctioned six-month break.

United's game against Blackburn is the first of four in a row against teams in the bottom six of the Premier League and manager Alex Ferguson said it is crucial his team takes advantage to stay ahead of City until the teams meet on April 30.

"We have a small advantage: it's not a great advantage; it can be changed in one game," Ferguson said. "We just have to take each game as it comes along. It's the only thing we can do."

Chelsea is at Aston Villa in another match Saturday, when third-place Arsenal is at Queens Park Rangers.

Everton hosts West Bromwich Albion, Fulham hosts Norwich, Wigan hosts Stoke and Wolverhampton Wanderers hosts Bolton.

On Sunday, it's Tottenham vs. Swansea and Newcastle vs. Liverpool.

Using your Lenovo ideapad K1 for business productivity

I?m a small business owner, and technician, and usually carry a laptop everywhere I go. Lately though I?m using my tablet for business much more and leaving the laptop turned off. If you?re thinking of getting a tablet for business or have one now and want to use it for more than just books and games, here?s how I?m using my tablet for business.

I picked up a 10 inch Lenovo Ideapad K1 tablet a while back specifically because the question was, ?What can you really do with a tablet??. I can?t say for the 7 inch screens, however a 10 inch screen is a great size for viewing and typing and facilitates activities that your phone screen are just too small for. Yes, it?s bigger and no it doesn?t fit in a pocket or purse, but I find it?s a good size.

Embrace the Environment

tablet for businessI have a Samsung Galaxy S smartphone running Android and no Apple products apart from an AppleTV. I?m also a tech who likes to have the flexibility to tinker with the OS and choose my apps. It made sense to stick with the Android OS. My company is small and so I can adapt more easily to new technology and change company processes and standards as opportunity comes along.

The K1 tablet runs Android as well and has now pushed me to embrace the Google environment since it is tied in so nicely. I?m at the point that if I really wanted to, I think I could eliminate Outlook and the Microsoft Office Suite, almost?.

The 10 inch screen size on the K1 is big enough that I can almost touch-type on it. I could get a bluetooth keyboard I suppose but that?s just one more thing to carry. I?m getting better at typing on the tablet without that sensory feedback of pushing a keyboard key.

Gmail

ideapad k1 android tablet for businessThe Gmail App on the Ideapad K1 slick and the 10 inch screen makes for easy reading. Spam gets pushed aside to its own folder and Google does a pretty good job of determining what is Spam. (I always check before deleting, just to be sure) Creating emails is intuitive and as I mention above, typing is pretty good ? especially in landscape mode, which is how I normally work. Start typing a contact name and the Gmail App offers suggestions you can pick.
A folder structure can be created and dragging emails to a folder is easy enough by just press-and-hold, then drag ? a feature that works in many places on the K1.

Google Calendar

using calendar lenovo k1 ideapadI now use the Google Calendar to track my customer visits throughout the day and record my activities while there. Later I copy/paste that information into Quickbooks for billing. (It is easier to do that on a computer ? imperative in fact, since Quickbooks will not run on the tablet). There are a few time tracking Apps I?ve seen that will let you port the entries into Quickbooks but I haven?t seen anything I liked.
Viewing your calendar on the Ideapad is delightful due to the screen size. I typically have the view on week-mode and can see appointments and details. Creating appointments is easy. The only complaint is that the description field is very small and I use this area to write my activities, which can be fairly detailed.
I also have access to other Shared Calendars, which you can see on the right, and it is very effective to be able to see them all, or toggle off the ones I don?t need to see right now. I can quickly see my schedule in comparison to other things going on. It?s very much like collaborating on Microsoft Exchange ? without Exchange.

Google Docs

lenovo ideapad k1 for businessI?ve used Google Docs now and again in the past but until now have never really embraced it. Now, having a tablet, I use it a lot! The ability to be at a customer site and quickly check their documentation without waiting 5 minutes for my laptop to power up is effective use of time. From that same customer, or my local coffee shop I can make quick updates as needed.
I keep the documents in Google format and do not try to convert back and forth to Microsoft Word. I want it simple without a lot of uploads/downloads. I also want to be able to edit wherever I am without restriction. If I really need to I can download to Microsoft doc format and would only do this if I need to send that document to someone who?s using MS Word.
The Ideapad K1 does have a Google Docs App, however it will not allow you to see formatted tables, which I use a lot. Instead I use the web-based version which is still very acceptable and easy to read and edit. Google please update this App!

Google Tasks

lenovo ideapad k1 for business google tasksI think that little web-based Google Tasks that pops up on the side in Gmail is pathetic! Fortunately the Google Tasks App on the Ideapad is much better. You can have five full-screen pages of tasks which you can filter by category. Assign dates, or not, and check them off when completed. It?s much easier to work with and as a Getting Things Done proponent I use tasks A LOT!

Widgets

I?ve pushed aside the standard square menu box that Lenovo has made default on the home screen of the Ideapad K1. Instead, my home screen has three Widgets: the Gmail widget, the Calendar widget, and the Tasks widget. They are expanded to fill the screen and give me an immediate quick overview of what?s going on and what might be coming up.
lenovo ideapad k1 tablet for businessOn a different page I use the Bookmarks widget to show my most-used pages and this give me quick access to those. One a third page I have the AccuWeather widget to track cities across Canada and I downloaded the Analytics widget that shows me Google Analytics visitor totals on various websites, plus icons for the other things I use.
The right widget makes all the difference.
I recommend browsing the included widgets on the tablet to see which ones will help make you more effective.

Synchronization

I still need and use my laptop, so it needs to be synchronized to my other devices. I would have thought that Google would create a program for my desktop to automatically sync from Outlook, however I had to go purchase a 3rd party program. I?ve been using gSyncit and so far have been pleased.

Conclusion

Using a tablet for business has given me an instant-on device with access to the things I use the most.
What I wanted was the same information (Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, Documentation) on every device so that there?s never any question of, ?am I looking at the most recent version of this??. My computer, smartphone, and tablet give me full access to the same content and a change on any one, updates the others.

What about you? Are you using your tablet for business? What works for you?

Develop An Estate Plan By Creating A Trust | Finance Tips

Based on Dean Betts Jr., Esquire, a Georgetown, DE lawyer at The Betts Legislation Firm, P. A., property planning is significant in case you?re incapacitated or cross on immediately, and oftentimes a trust will be part of that. Here, Betts talks about what a belief can do for you, although he cautions that it is not for everyone?

It is very important develop an estate plan. Most people understand that having a will is significant to ensure that their belongings are passed on to their meant heirs. They don?t always understand, however, that a complete property plan must also embody an Advanced Well being Care Directive, additionally known as a dwelling will, and a Common Durable Energy of Attorney. In addition, Revocable Dwelling Trusts and Testamentary Trusts are also useful tools in the case of property planning.

Benefits of Making a Belief

A belief is a authorized doc that creates an entity that can obtain property and administer that property in accordance with its terms. For example, in case you are leaving money to a minor, you?ll be able to put it right into a belief for when that individual reaches a authorized age and has the maturity to deal with the money. Someone might be named Trustee of that trust to manage the money on behalf of the particular person the cash was left to.

Trusts can be used to shelter assets from collectors and ex-spouses as well as to supply for young or less responsible beneficiaries to take pleasure in the benefits of your presents with out with the ability to frivolously spend the money. However that?s not all ? they may also be helpful in avoiding probate charges and in distributing assets exterior of the probate process. That keeps the knowledge out of the general public view for people who are concerned about preserving their financial issues private.

Sorts of Trusts

Trusts can both be Revocable or Irrevocable Residing Trusts, or Testamentary Trusts provided in an individual?s will. A Revocable Belief is a trust that may be modified during the lifetime of the creator of the trust. That may obviously provide some flexibility in one?s potential to alter the trust document. Once that particular person dies, thought, the Revocable Trust reverts to being an Irrevocable Belief,?stock market news which cannot be changed. Irrevocable Trusts can also be arrange initially in sure circumstances, most often to qualify for presidency benefits. A Testamentary Belief is just a belief that is created by an individual?s will.

In addition to Dwelling and Testamentary Trusts, you may additionally hear rather a lot about Spendthrift Trusts. A Spendthrift Belief is one you would set up for a person who will not be liable for no matter reason. The thought is that you?re leaving the cash to a specific particular person for his benefit, but someone else controls the money for him. That individual known as the Trustee. The Trustee decides what money to provide to the beneficiary, how much, when, and for what purposes.

While trusts can be very useful in protecting belongings from creditors or people who are not accountable with their cash, they are not for everyone. I recommend that you simply consult with an legal professional to find out whether a trust is suitable to your specific situation. Trusts can add a degree of complexity to a scenario, and they may also create certain transactional costs, such as the submitting of separate tax returns and the administration of property by somebody apart from the particular person creating the trust.

Improve Your Memory | Brain Games | Prevent Alzheimer's Disease ...

Memory GameA lot of brain fitness and health advice is good old fashioned common sense:

  • Eat lots of fruits and vegetables
  • Get plenty of rest
  • Reduce the amount of stress in your life
  • Be active

We?re familiar with these healthy tips because we?ve been reading them for more years than we?d care to count. These 4 rules are the core of every disease-prevention tool box out there.? Diabetes, cancer, heart disease, obesity, and so on ? none of these tend to favor the individual who eats a healthy diet, gets plenty of activity in their life, gets around 7 hours of sleep each night, and manages stress (rather than the other way around).

The fact that we?re so familiar with them is what concerns me.? Sometimes we take them for granted. They become like the old standards:

  • If you don?t have anything good to say, don?t say anything at all.
  • Wash your hands before eating.
  • Brush your teeth 3x a day.
  • Always say PLEASE and THANK YOU.
  • etc?

I don?t have to point out how few of these we adhere to religiously. Don?t tell my dentist, but I can?t remember the time I brushed my teeth 3x a day.

When we hear things so often (or read them, for that matter), we get to the place where they don?t even register.? How many times have you read an article about health and fitness and just glanced over the paragraph about trans fats as you thought, ?Yeah, yeah, tell me something I don?t know.??

When advice can help us live longer and live better, we need to stop glancing and start advancing.? Our heart and our brains desperately need for us to eat healthier, stress less, get more activity, and sleep 7 hours each night. Don?t wait until problems creep up before you give your life a healthy overhaul ? do it before any problems are even thought about.

One of the Most Important Necessities of Brain Strengthening

In addition to the healthy advice above that we?re all going to start LIVING OUT rather than LEAVING OUT, an equally important part of brain strengthening, improving your memory, and preventing Alzheimer?s Disease and dementia is this:? Work out and challenge your brain each and every single day.? Yes, you should read a variety of subjects.? But if you want to really challenge your brain and flex your mental muscles, you need to fall in love with brain training games.

These brain training games can improve your memory, train you to think faster, help you focus, and make your confidence soar.? Some games that you may have on your shelves qualify: Scrabble, Monopoly, Pictionary, Checkers, LIFE, etc.

As someone pretty much? make that very much? obsessed with the subjects of brain health, fighting memory loss, and preventing dementia (including Alzheimer?s), I?d love to see people collecting and using brain training and strengthening games as faithfully as resistance bands and dumbbells.? A pet peeve is when people put their ALL into their physical health without thinking about their mental health whatsoever.? Certainly, many things that improve our physical health also improve our mental health ? but it takes more.? And, seriously, what?s the use of a strong body if one has a weak mind?? Our brains are our control centers. They deserve more of our attention!

For optimum brain strength and health, we have to challenge our mind and work it out as we do the rest of our bodies.

That?s where brain games can be golden. And fun!? The game shown at the top of this article is a perfect example. This game is the Name 5 Game and it should, in my humble opinion, be the first brain game added to a growing collection.?? Why? Because it meets the criteria:

  1. It?s fun! You?ll play regularly ? for fun without even thinking about it?s function.
  2. It?s effective. The Marble Store?s Brain expert puts it this way: ?Activate your frontal cortex as you think critically and make decisions during this game.? What they said.
  3. Games such as this train you to think fast on your feet. Remember in school when the teacher asked a question and your hand darted up? Or when you completed homework in 20 minutes because your bike was waiting for you? We can train our brain to work faster again. The great thing is, it?ll be as fun as a bike ride!

I hope you?ll click through and check out this exciting game, as well as the countless others in Marbles: The Brain Store. You might want to start with their 2012 Marbles Sweet 16.? WHERE you start isn?t nearly as important as THAT you start.

Make each moment count double!

Woman to wed slain French soldier posthumously

(AP) ? The pregnant girlfriend of a French soldier killed in a dramatic gun rampage will wed her partner posthumously, a family lawyer said Saturday.

Paratrooper Abel Chennouf was shot dead earlier this month at a cash machine in southern France, one of a series of killings blamed on 24-year-old Islamist fanatic Mohamed Merah.

Lawyer Gilbert Collard said that Chennouf's pregnant girlfriend, 21-year-old Caroline Monet, is applying for permission to get married to her late partner at an official ceremony in a few weeks' time.

Such ceremonies are unusual but not unheard of in France, where the law allow posthumous marriages in cases where a fiance dies before the wedding. The law states that such weddings can only be approved by the French president "in grave circumstances."

"I've already had it done twice, for policemen's girlfriends," Collard said in a telephone interview. "It's a really moving ceremony, with an empty chair representing the dead spouse."

Collard said the official request was being sent out Saturday, but that he'd already received the nod from the French president's office.

"There won't be any problems," Collard said, adding that he hopes the ceremony will "let the child have a father."

Leader of Coptic Orthodox Church in Middle East

The Irish Times - Saturday, March 24, 2012

Pope Shenouda III of Alexandria:?POPE SHENOUDA III of Alexandria, who has died aged 88 after suffering from prostate cancer, was for four decades the spiritual leader of the Coptic Orthodox Church, the largest Christian community in the Middle East. In his native Egypt he was patriarch to seven to 11 million Copts ? the government of the predominantly Muslim country giving a lower estimate than the church ? and another four million worldwide.

Coptic congregants, worshipping in a tradition that goes back to the earliest days of Christianity, held ?Baba Shenouda? in high regard. Yet his pontifical reign was marked by controversy. While inter-communal strife saw thousands of Copts leave Egypt, critics blamed him for politicising his office and exacerbating matters, either through over-assertiveness or timidity. Egypt?s 2011 uprising threw such tensions into starker relief.

Ten years into his papacy, Shenouda had famously fallen out with president Anwar Sadat; in September 1981 he was summarily dethroned and banished to an ancient desert monastery. Reinstated by Sadat?s successor, Hosni Mubarak, in January 1985, the Coptic pope, 117th in a line of leaders that began with St Mark, achieved considerable successes. The ordination of deaconesses was resumed after an interval of several centuries, and he brought women into theological colleges and councils, though he was against them becoming priests.

Shenouda also represented Coptic lay and political interests in Egypt and fostered ties with wealthier Coptic diasporas in the US, Canada, Europe, South Africa and Australia.

However, he was beset by problems in his final years and past troubles came back to haunt him, too. In 1976 he dismissed a rebellious deacon, Max Michel, who in 2005 was declared a bishop by an Orthodox organisation in Nebraska, and the following year crowned himself Archbishop Maximus I, head of a rival St Athanasius Church. Michel claimed God had deserted Shenouda?s congregation and that more than a million Copts had become Muslims or evangelical Christians. While Michel attracted little support, he caused much rancour.

Shenouda developed a close working relationship with Mubarak. Initially he discouraged Copts from taking part in the demonstrations that led to Mubarak?s overthrow in February 2011.

Faced with January 2012?s elections to a parliament dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood and conservative Islamists, many Copts supported the liberal, secular Muslim-Christian Egyptian Bloc, which achieved fourth place. Others formed Coptic parties, a move Shenouda had resisted.

He was born Nazir Gayed, the youngest of eight children in Asyut, southern Egypt, moved to Cairo at 16 and served as a novice at St Anthony?s Church school. In 1947, he gained a BA in history from Cairo University, fought as an officer in the Arab-Israeli war the following year and then taught English in a high school.

In 1949, he graduated from the Coptic Orthodox Theological Seminary. Four years later, he began teaching at the Monastic School in Helwan and became professor of Old Testament studies. All the while he dabbled in classics and archaeology; he wrote poetry and penned newspaper opinion pieces.

Gayed entered the El Suryan (St Mary) monastery in 1954. From 1956 to 1962, he lived in a cave and experienced ?complete freedom and clarification?. His teacher was the charismatic Fr Matta el-Meskin (Matthew the Poor), later to become an opponent. Sadat offered Matta the papacy in place of Shenouda in 1981.

Recalled from the hermit?s life, Gayed became dean of the Coptic Seminary and bishop for religious education with the saintly name of Shenouda. Within seven years, enrolment of part-time students had grown tenfold.

Shenouda was appointed personal secretary to the newly elected pope Kyrillos VI in 1959. After Kyrillos died in 1971, Gayed was enthroned as His Holiness Shenouda III, pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of All Africa.

More ebullient than his predecessor, he inspired the growth of churches outside Egypt and the number of bishops rose from 20 to 83. But life beyond the cloisters proved more perilous. In September 1981, Sadat arrested Shenouda along with 1,500 other ?opposition figures?. He banished Shenouda to Wadi Natrun. A month later, Sadat was assassinated.

Eventually Mubarak recalled Shenouda to the papal seat. Vowing to be a turbulent priest no more, Shenouda told a welcoming party of 10,000 at St Mark?s Cathedral: ?We Christians and Muslims are like organs in one body, which is Egypt.?

He often met Egypt?s supreme Muslim cleric, Sheikh Mohammed Tantawi, and championed Arab causes. He backed the Madrid conference of 1991 intended to further the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. For 20 years, Shenouda?s Ramadan breakfasts helped repair Muslim-Coptic rifts. Shenouda visited pope Paul VI in Rome in 1973 and signed a declaration of common faith. This marked the first meeting between Alexandrine and Roman pontiffs since 451. In 1989 he signed a similar concordat with his Orthodox brothers, and in 2000 he welcomed pope John Paul II to Egypt.

His comments on Jews often sailed close to crass anti-Semitism and he rebuffed calls to soften Coptic strictures on divorce.

On January 1st last year, 23 people were killed outside a Coptic church in Alexandria. When Egypt?s revolution began later that month, the sight of Christians chanting alongside Muslims in Tahrir Square, Korans and crosses held aloft, momentarily dispelled fears of sectarian carnage. But after Mubarak?s departure 12 died as extremists attacked churches in Cairo?s poor Imbaba district in May. When thousands of Copts took to the streets to protest against the state?s demolition of an ?unlicensed? church in Aswan, the resulting military crackdown left 27 people dead.

Shenouda hailed the victims as martyrs, ?beloved children whose blood does not come cheap?. Yet he faced defiance from the Maspero Youth Union, Copts who condemned the governing Supreme Council of the Allied Forces. There was therefore urgency in Shenouda?s call for national unity at a Christmas service in St Mark?s at the beginning of January this year. This month?s visit by Muslim Brotherhood leaders to Shenouda echoed that sentiment, as did the Maspero Youth?s slogan at cathedral prayers for the ailing pope: ?Your people love you.?
