Vilanova's smooth transition to coach has helped Barcelona, insists Van Bronckhorst

Goal : ?? Giovanni Van Bronckhorst has revealed that Barcelona are at a slight advantage due to the fact that Tito Vilanova had experienced much of the club's recent success.

Vilanova replaced Pep Guardiola at Camp Nou in June after working as his assistant for five years, and former Netherlands captain Van Bronckhorst believes that Barca's good start to the season can be put down to their coach's understanding of the way the team plays.

"He knows perfectly the style of Barcelona. He knows the players and for them this is good, because normally with a new coach you must adapt to a new way of working," he told Uefa.com.

Qatari emir pays landmark visit to Gaza

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) ? The emir of Qatar received a hero's welcome during a landmark visit to Gaza on Tuesday, becoming the first head of state to visit the Palestinian territory since the Islamist militant Hamas seized control of the coastal strip five years ago.

The landmark visit by Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani handed the ruling Hamas ? branded terrorists by the West and isolated by an Israeli blockade ? its biggest diplomatic victory since taking power. It was also a strong sign of the rising power of oil-rich Qatar, and the mounting influence of Hamas' parent movement, the Muslim Brotherhood, since last year's Arab Spring uprisings.

While Gazans celebrated the emir's arrival, the rival Palestinian government of Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank was less enthusiastic. Israel condemned the visit as undermining peace.

Hamas wrested control of Gaza from Abbas' Fatah forces in 2007, and West Bank officials fear the emir's visit will give the Iranian-backed Hamas a lift in their feud and make the split between the two territories more permanent.

While Abbas has welcomed Qatar's plans to deliver hundreds of millions of dollars in aid to impoverished Gaza, he also stressed in a phone call with the Qatari leader this week that he is the internationally recognized leader of the Palestinians.

Israel, which brandishes Hamas as terrorist for its suicide bombings and strikes on Israeli civilian targets, denounced the visit.

"It is quite strange that the emir of Qatar should take sides with Hamas, that he will favor Hamas over Fatah that he would even decide to take sides in the Palestinian internal conflict," said Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman, Yigal Palmor. "This is more than strange, especially since Hamas is internationally recognized as a terror group ... by hugging Hamas publicly, the emir of Qatar has thrown peace under the bus."

In Gaza, white and maroon Qatari flags flapped in the streets and a song called "Thank you, Qatar" played on the radio and on TV. In the border area, Hamas set up a large, carpeted greeting tent, reminiscent of a luxurious desert camp and staged an honor guard ceremony after the emir crossed into the territory from Egypt.

Thousands of cheering and waving Palestinians lined the main road to Gaza City to greet the emir, who rolled down the window of his armored car to shake hands with dozens of people. Women on balconies threw flowers and rice on his convoy.

"This man is bold. I like him. At least he came and visited us, and didn't play games promising like the others," said Majed Tawel, a 33-year-old teacher. "Hamas has won a new victory today and (Abbas) lost."

The emir was received by Gaza's Hamas prime minister, Ismail Haniyeh, who said the visit sent a powerful message.

"Gaza is not alone and Palestine occupies the hearts of Arabs," Haniyeh said. "Your visit today officially announces the break of the economic blockade and political blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip by the forces of injustice."

He said the emir had promised a total of $400 million of aid projects, an increase over earlier plans for $250 million in aid. During his four-hour visit, the emir launched a housing project, hospital and received an honorary degree.

In a sudden change of schedule, the emir called off a planned public address in Gaza City's main soccer stadium. Hamas officials cited the emir's tight schedule, but the stadium was only sparsely filled at the time of the cancellation.

Instead, Sheik Hamad delivered a speech at a smaller venue at Gaza's Islamic University, a Hamas stronghold.

The emir was presented with an honorary doctorate and several presents, including a key from a Palestinian house in what is now Israel. Such keys are a symbol used by Palestinian refugees whose families lost homes during the war surrounding Israel's establishment in 1948.

The Qatari projects will bolster Hamas and help ease its economic woes. Although the Islamist group remains firmly in control, the Israeli blockade has hit Gaza's economy hard.

Israel imposed the blockade after the Hamas takeover in a failed effort to stir up Gazans against their violently anti-Israel rulers. It was forced to ease the land blockade after a deadly May 2010 raid on a blockade-busting flotilla, but still maintains a tight naval embargo in an effort to stem the weapons flow to the coastal territory. Egypt also bans most trade in and out of the coastal strip.

In addition, much of the international community shuns Hamas, a stance that forces it to rely heavily on an underground economy.

At the stadium, Gaza women piled into the back stands reserved for them hours ahead of the emir's speech. They sat under the watchful eye of Hamas policewomen in uniforms of long blue robes, light blue headscarves and navy hats.

"I'm desperate, trying to find a job for my son," said Kifaya Gharabli, 42, who came early in the morning in hopes of catching a glimpse of the Qatari visitors.

Part of the aid package is a $150 million housing project near the southern town of Khan Younis. It will be built near the site of a former Israeli settlement, abandoned when Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005. The project is called Hamad City ? after the Qatari emir ? and is expected to take about two years to build.

Gaza has been in dire need of building materials since an Israeli military offensive in early 2009, launched in response to years of Hamas rocket fire. Israel restricts the entry of building materials, saying they could be diverted by Hamas for bunkers or military use. In order to get around the Israeli blockade, Qatar plans to ship in the materials through the Egyptian border.

The emir's visit highlighted Qatar's efforts to make its mark on a region in turmoil, in part through a strategy of diverse alliances. The Gulf state expanded its regional influence during the Arab Spring uprisings that toppled dictators in Libya, Tunisia and Egypt last year, lending support to opposition and rebel forces.

At the same time, it hosts a major U.S. air base and thousands of American troops. And while Qatar is leading Arab calls to aid Syrian forces trying to topple Bashar Assad, it has close ties with Syria's key ally, Iran.

Qatar already wielded considerable indirect influence through pan-Arab broadcaster Al-Jazeera, whose launch in 1996 was bankrolled by the Qatari government. It also won the right to host the 2022 World Cup, defeating far bigger bidders, including the United States and Japan.

Also, it demonstrated a bold independence in 1996 when it allowed Israel to open a trade office in the capital, Doha, following the signing of an interim peace accord with the Palestinians. But it shut that office after Israel's 2009 offensive in Gaza and began boosting aid to Hamas, whose leadership relocated to Qatar after leaving war-torn Syria.

October Is Breast Cancer Awareness Month - ICTMN.com

While watching Monday Night Football this week one couldn?t help but notice the bright pink shoes, gloves, towels and ribbons being sported by the players, officials, and coaches. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and all across the country, professional athletes, celebrities, teachers, politicians and everyday citizens are adding pink, the pink ribbon of breast cancer, to their uniforms, work clothes and everyday attire.

At the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek, they are promoting a ?Pink It Up? campaign in which guests may purchase a pink wrist band or T-shirt or make a direct $1 donation with all proceeds going to local non-profit charitable organizations that help to address and raise awareness of breast cancer.

You will see pink on labels of nearly every grocery store as major grocery chains join in the pink rally. There are walks, runs, and relays, and there are luncheons, dinners, auctions, and galas, all to support breast cancer awareness, prevention, screening, treatment and research to find a cure.

Seeing some very large football players wear pink, I thought to myself ?I wonder what my tribal council would look like if they all wore pink for breast cancer awareness?? For me, it would be so much more significant to know that our tribal communities were truly united in solidarity to promote breast cancer awareness with purpose and with meaningful and measurable results.

Breast cancer is a reality in Indian country. In the April 2012 Journal of Cancer Education, it was noted that despite national decreases in breast cancer incidence and mortality rates, the declines do not appear among American Indian/Alaskan Native women. Health disparities among our population are evident. We have lower screening rates. Our cancers are detected at a later stage, and with greater mortality. Why?

This is a call to all Native people. We are the ones who have stated for generations, that women are the backbone of our people; that women are the center of our lodges; that women are sacred; and that a nation is defeated only when its women are gone. Let us all join in our fight against breast cancer. Together, we can turn the tide on this, the leading killer of Native women.

I would like to encourage everyone to join me in this effort. Talk to your tribal leaders. Organize a breast cancer awareness campaign locally. Promote health and wellness by providing ongoing breast cancer education, offering mammograms throughout our communities, and supporting those already diagnosed with immediate access to care by health care providers that specialize in this area.

Sure, wear pink, start your own walk, relay, and run to promote breast cancer awareness and treatment. Speak to your communities, to your tribal council members, to your sisters, daughters, mothers, and grandmothers, and share the importance of breast cancer education. Join me and demonstrate our strength and bring breast cancer to the forefront of our discussions, let our leaders tackle this with passion and let us all do our part to fight breast cancer and support those in need.

One out of every eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. I am one of those who received that diagnosis. But it is a fight that can be won. I joined my sister as a breast cancer survivor. I learned there is an entire breast cancer sisterhood out there. So many Native women came to me and offered words of encouragement, prayers, suggestions, and shared their own personal stories. I never knew how much breast cancer has affected our community. I never knew how strong I could be during my fight, and I never knew how strong our community can be when one of us needs help and support.

Look around you. See the women and girls in your life and consider the odds. What can we do to turn this tide?

Will Apple introduce a 7-inch iPad? Case makers think so.

Makers of cases and other accessories have already started producing products designed to fit an iPad with a 7-inch screen, which they expect Apple to introduce on Tuesday. ??

'iPad Mini' rumors: Will iLuv's Belgique case fit this time?

Apple products are badly kept secrets these days. It's now a given that the company will introduce an iPad with a 7-inch screen at its "a little more to show you" press event next Tuesday, Oct. 23.

Pundits and rumor collectors might have been wrong on the timing of a 7-inch iPad Mini device, expecting it to be announced along with the iPhone 5 on Sept. 12. But it looks like the substance of the iPad Mini rumors was correct, two accessory makers have told TechNewsDaily.

Companies that make accessories often have the best insider information, because they have to churn out a lot of product as fast as they can, and many of them have to fit the core product exactly.

Many major players nailed it with the?iPhone 5, which saw more companies than usual pre-producing items that were exact fits. Speck, a maker of complex, tight-fitting cases, built them in advance for the first time ever with the iPhone 5, the company told us. Previously, its best turnaround had been 30 days after launch for the popular Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone.

In comparison, most companies were very cautious about the iPad Mini. Popular case manufacturer iLuv, for example, produced just a single case for the Sept. 12 event. And it was a soft cover with enough give to accommodate the possibility of slight inaccuracies in the info the designers had received.

But some companies display more confidence. Turkish-based Trust showed off an entire line of cases, essentially a mock store display, back in the first week of September at the IFA Berlin tech show.

Also at IFA was Skech, which sells products for most Apple mobile devices as well as for Samsung Galaxy phones. The company had iPhone 5 cases at the time, and is now ready for the iPad Mini. In an email to TechNewsDaily, Kfir Benshushan, the company's marketing director, said, "As for [the] mini iPad, information has not changed much since IFA." The company has already produced two iPad Mini products, in fact ? a cover, very similar to Apple's own smart cover, called Flipper and a case called SkechBook.

A representative of another accessory maker, who asked not to be named and that we also not name the company, said in an email, "We do have confidence in the information we're receiving." However, the company has chosen not to make accessories in advance this time, but instead to wait until it has iPad Minis in hand.

And there could still be surprises. Benshushan of Skech said that he is concerned about the likely iPad Mini 's version of the magnet that holds covers in place. "Rumors strongly suggests that the magnet on the mini iPad will be completely different from [the one in] the iPad," he wrote. "How exactly? I can't say."

In any case, we won?t have to wait much longer to find out.

Microsoft announces Skype for Windows 8: full-screen calls, push notifications and People Hub integration

Microsoft announces Skype for Windows 8: full-screen calls, push notifications and People Hub integration

With Windows 8 going on sale in just four days, Microsoft is doing a sensible thing and releasing a version of Skype optimized for Win 8. As you'd expect, Skype for Windows 8 has the same overarching look and feel as other apps, which is to say you can swipe from left to right to see different categories, such as recent activity, favorites and a complete contacts list. But the integration with Windows 8 goes a little deeper than that. Just as you can pinch your Live Tiles to zoom out and make them easier to navigate, you can use semantic zoom to sift through a long list of contacts. And, because Skype runs in the background, you can set up your Start Screen so that the Skype Live Tile shows notifications for things like missed calls. Additionally, Skype is now baked into the People Hub, so that someone's Skype handle shows up alongside other forms of contact, like an email address or phone number.

The in-call experience has also been modified to take advantage of certain features in Win 8. For one, you can link your Skype and Microsoft account, so that when you log into your system using your Microsoft ID, you'll already be logged into Skype. While on a call, you can conduct video chats using the whole screen, at which point chat messages from that person will show up as text bubbles on the side of the screen. At any time, you can swipe to see other recent activity, which could be handy if you're juggling multiple IM conversations at once.

If you prefer, you can also dock Skype on the side of the screen, as you can with any other program in Win 8. With the Skype chat taking up just a third (or two thirds) of the screen, you can use that remaining real estate for an IM chat within Skype, or maybe a web search. Lastly, if you return to the home screen, there's a large phone icon up top where you'll find the dialer, whose number pad allow your fingers plenty of room to hit the right keys. You'll see your balance listed there, too, in the event you're not planning on making a free call to another Skype user. That's our quick summary of what's new, but if you like you'll soon be able to experience it yourself: the app will be available for free in the Windows Store on October 26th.
