Hard drive shipments recover from floods in Thailand, expected to reach record high

Hard drive shipments recover from floods in Thailand, expected to reach record high

Last year's floods in Thailand caused hard drive shortages after wreaking havoc on a number of electronics manufacturers, but new stats from IHS iSuppli indicate that the HDD market for PCs has fully recovered and is poised to hit an all time high. The firm expects 524 million units for internal use in PCs to ship this year, besting the previous record by 4.3 percent. What's giving the recovery an added boost? According to the analytics group, the extra demand comes courtesy of Windows 8 and Ultrabooks. Unfortunately for deal hounds, the company noted in a report earlier this year that prices aren't expected to dip below the pre-flood range until 2014. If IHS iSuppli projections hold true, total annual hard drive shipments could reach 575.1 million by 2016.

Gene that causes a form of deafness discovered

ScienceDaily (Sep. 30, 2012) ? Researchers at the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center have found a new genetic mutation responsible for deafness and hearing loss associated with Usher syndrome type 1.

These findings, published in the Sept. 30 advance online edition of the journal Nature Genetics, could help researchers develop new therapeutic targets for those at risk for this syndrome.

Partners in the study included the National Institute on Deafness and other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Kentucky.

Usher syndrome is a genetic defect that causes deafness, night-blindness and a loss of peripheral vision through the progressive degeneration of the retina.

"In this study, researchers were able to pinpoint the gene which caused deafness in Usher syndrome type 1 as well as deafness that is not associated with the syndrome through the genetic analysis of 57 humans from Pakistan and Turkey," says Zubair Ahmed, PhD, assistant professor of ophthalmology who conducts research at Cincinnati Children's and is the lead investigator on this study.

Ahmed says that a protein, called CIB2, which binds to calcium within a cell, is associated with deafness in Usher syndrome type 1 and non-syndromic hearing loss.

"To date, mutations affecting CIB2 are the most common and prevalent genetic cause of non-syndromic hearing loss in Pakistan," he says. "However, we have also found another mutation of the protein that contributes to deafness in Turkish populations.

"In animal models, CIB2 is found in the mechanosensory stereocilia of the inner ear -- hair cells, which respond to fluid motion and allow hearing and balance, and in retinal photoreceptor cells, which convert light into electrical signals in the eye, making it possible to see," says Saima Riazuddin, PhD, assistant professor in UC's department of otolaryngology who conducts research at Cincinnati Children's and is co-lead investigator on the study.

Researchers found that CIB2 staining is often brighter at shorter row stereocilia tips than the neighboring stereocilia of a longer row, where it may be involved in calcium signaling that regulates mechano-electrical transduction, a process by which the ear converts mechanical energy -- or energy of motion -- into a form of energy that the brain can recognize as sound.

"With this knowledge, we are one step closer to understanding the mechanism of mechano-electrical transduction and possibly finding a genetic target to prevent non-syndromic deafness as well as that associated with Usher syndrome type 1," Ahmed says.

Other researchers involved in the study include Thomas Friedman, PhD, and Inna Belyantseva, MD, PhD, from the NIDCD; Suzanne Leal, PhD, and her team at Baylor; and Gregory Frolenkov, PhD, and his team at the University of Kentucky.

This study was funded by the NIDCD, the National Science Foundation and the Research to Prevent Blindness Foundation.

Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is no ordinary archeologist. When we first see him, he is somewhere in the Peruvian jungle in 1936, running a booby-trapped gauntlet (complete with an over-sized rolling boulder) to fetch a solid-gold idol. He loses this artifact to his chief rival, a French archeologist named Belloq (Paul Freeman), who then prepares to kill our hero. In the first of many serial-like escapes, Indy eludes Belloq by hopping into a convenient plane. So, then: is Indiana Jones afraid of anything? Yes, snakes. The next time we see Jones, he's a soft-spoken, bespectacled professor. He is then summoned from his ivy-covered environs by Marcus Brody (Denholm Elliott) to find the long-lost Ark of the Covenant. The Nazis, it seems, are already searching for the Ark, which the mystical-minded Hitler hopes to use to make his stormtroopers invincible. But to find the Ark, Indy must first secure a medallion kept under the protection of Indy's old friend Abner Ravenwood, whose daughter, Marion (Karen Allen), evidently has a "history" with Jones. Whatever their personal differences, Indy and Marion become partners in one action-packed adventure after another, ranging from wandering the snake pits of the Well of Souls to surviving the pyrotechnic unearthing of the sacred Ark. A joint project of Hollywood prodigies George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, with a script co-written by Lawrence Kasdan and Philip Kaufman, among others, Raiders of the Lost Ark is not so much a movie as a 115-minute thrill ride. Costing 22 million dollars (nearly three times the original estimate), Raiders of the Lost Ark reaped 200 million dollars during its first run. It was followed by Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1985) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), as well as a short-lived TV-series "prequel." ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Ancient burial shroud offers up surprise

Ancient scraps of fabric found in a grave in Denmark are not made of cultivated flax as once believed, but instead are woven from imported wild nettles, suggesting the grave's inhabitant may have traveled far for burial. ?

This discovery, announced Friday in the journal Scientific Reports, casts a new light on the textile trade in Bronze Age Europe, said study researcher Ulla Mannering, an archaeologist at the University of Copenhagen.

"Since the Stone Age, they had very well-developed agriculture and technology for producing linen textiles," Mannering told LiveScience. "So it's really unusual that a society which has established agriculture would also take in material from things that are not of the normal standardized agricultural production" ? in other words, wild plants.

A luxurious shroud
The soft and shiny fabric dates back to between 940 B.C. and 750 B.C., making it about 2,800 years old. It was discovered in Voldtofte, Denmark, at a rich Bronze Age burial ground called Lusehoj. The Bronze Age ran from about 3200 B.C. to 600 B.C. in Europe.

The fabric was wrapped around a bundle of cremated remains in a bronze urn. It was a luxurious piece of material, Mannering said. [ 10 Weird Ways We Deal With the Dead ]

"The fibers we get from the European nettle are very, very fine and soft and shiny, and we often say this is a sort of prehistoric silk textile," Mannering said. (Silk, made from insect cocoons, is known for its shimmery texture.)

Previous analysis pegged the Danish fabric as woven from flax, a plant widely cultivated in the region. But along with nanophysicist Bodil Holst of the University of Bergen in Norway, Mannering and her colleagues used advanced methods to reanalyze the scraps of cloth. By studying the fiber orientation as well as the presence of certain crystals found in plants, the researchers were able to learn that the fabric is not flax at all, but nettle, a group of plants known for the needlelike stingers that line their stems and leaves.

Nor is the nettle local, Mannering said. Different soil regions contain different variations of elements. The variation of one of these elements, strontium, found in the fabric, was not local to Denmark, suggesting the plants the textile was made from grew elsewhere.

There are a few regions that match the strontium profile, the researchers found, but the most likely candidate is southwest Austria. The bronze burial urn holding the remains is from Austria, Mannering said, and it makes sense that the fabric might be too.

A well-traveled man?
Despite these imported grave goods, the remains appear to be those of a Danish man, Mannering said. The personal objects in the grave, such as two razors, suggest he was a Scandinavian, albeit perhaps a well-traveled one, she said.

"Maybe he died in Austria and was wrapped in this Austrian urn and Austrian textile and was brought back to Denmark in this condition and then put in a big burial mound," Mannering said. "The personal objects that were placed inside the urn together with this textile and the bones indicate that he is a male of Scandinavian origin, but it doesn't mean that he couldn't have died abroad."

Bronze Age Europeans lived an agricultural life and traded many goods with one another, especially the bronze that gave the era its name, Mannering said. The nettle fabric may have been an ancient luxury good for Bronze Age elite, she said.

"It shows that they also knew how to get fibers from wild plants, and they wanted these fibers probably because of their very different and unique appearance," she said.

French budget heavy on taxes, could hurt Hollande

PARIS (AP) ? France's new budget may be the worst of both worlds. It lacks the serious spending cuts that economists say are needed to put the country on a path to growth ? but also doesn't unleash the wave of stimulus that voters expected from their Socialist president, Francois Hollande.

The 2013 budget includes his infamous pledge to tax the ultra-rich at 75 percent, and it meets an important requirement: It will reduce France's deficit to 3 percent of its gross domestic product, a major Hollande campaign promise and the level that will halt the rising tide of the country's enormous debt.

But it's not making anyone happy.

French workers who are watching factories close and unemployment climb say Hollande is not doing enough to stop either event. Hollande may have spared his countrymen the massive budget cuts that neighbors Spain and Italy are enforcing, but people are still turning against him.

After a brief honeymoon following his May election, Hollande has seen his popularity slump right along with France's economy. Two polls this month, by Ifop and BVA, showed most respondents are unhappy with the job that Hollande is doing.

The reasons they gave varied widely, from those who say he's not doing enough to reform France to those who say he's not doing enough to make it a fairer place.

The budget also represents a major backtrack for Hollande, who won the presidency by campaigning against the kind of Europe-wide austerity championed by his conservative predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

On the other hand, economists say Hollande is just eking by with this budget and that drastically raising taxes does nothing to improve France's global competitiveness, which is fading fast. Business leaders complain he'll scare away both the rich and the investment the country desperately needs.

"France is sick from a model that isn't viable," said Guillaume Carou, CEO of Didaxis and president of the Club of Entrepreneurs, which represents 15,000 small businesses. "But (the government has) chosen to keep it, that's what the 2013 budget reveals."

The government's budget ? which relies heavily on tax hikes to fill a ?30 billion ($38.8 billion) hole and rein in the deficit a bit ? also lacks any sweeping reforms of France's labor market.

Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici rejected such criticisms.

"To those who say to us, 'there are no cuts in this law,' these numbers constitute a formal denial," he told reporters. "Spending cuts assume reforms ... which take time."

The problem is that France may be running out of time.

The French economy, the second-largest among the 17 countries that use the euro, has not grown for three straight quarters, the national statistics agency confirmed Friday. Its GDP stands at ?1.8 trillion ($2.2 trillion). Unemployment has been on the rise for more than a year and stands at 10.2 percent.

If France doesn't drastically reduce its debt ? which is more than 90 percent of its GDP ? and dramatically loosen its labor market quickly, growth will likely continue to slide. Italy, Spain and Greece ? which are using the crisis to modernize their economies ? could eventually pull investment away from France.

To restart growth, France needs to both dramatically reduce its spending and lower its tax burden, one of the highest in the world, economist Marc Touati said.

"Either France finds growth and modernizes its economy in order to cut unemployment, or it continues to be in denial and unemployment will explode," he said.

If investors think France isn't doing enough to clean up its act, they'll start charging the country more to lend to it.

The budget shows the perverse way in which France has benefited from the debt crisis plaguing the eurozone. Because France has been considered a relatively safe haven among the mess, its borrowing rates are historically low and dropping. And the 2013 budget made use of that: The assumption is that the average interest rate for next year will be lower than the one for this year. That netted the government around ?2 billion ($2.6 billion) ? for nothing.

While the budget makes ?10 billion ($12.9 billion) in cuts ? in everything from administrative costs to the defense budget ? it actually holds next year's spending even with this year's. The cuts were necessary because spending would have automatically increased because of salary hikes and inflation.

It also levies a series of taxes, mostly on the rich and big companies.

The most famous is a 75-percent tax on income earned over ?1 million ($1.3 million). At the moment the current top rate of tax is 41 percent. The measure, which will run for two years, is largely symbolic ? it would only hit a tiny number of people and barely make a dent in the deficit, bringing in an estimated ?100 million to ?300 million a year? but it has caused fears that the rich would flee France for friendly tax climates.

There are other measures that also hit the rich and large businesses, like increases in the capital gains taxes and a bigger bite for companies that distribute profits in dividends. Many voters see these as a good thing that the well-off take a disproportionate share of the tax burden.

Companies, however, complain that these measures penalize the very people who could reduce unemployment.

Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault rejected that characterization, insisting that the budget would win the battle against unemployment.

"It's a budget that aims to inspire confidence and to break the debt spiral that keeps growing and growing," he said after it was presented to the Cabinet.

The budget is built around an expectation of 0.8 percent growth for next year. If growth misses the projections, more cuts could be needed later.

Moscovici conceded that most economists predict the French economy will grow just 0.5 percent, but said if the European debt crisis stabilizes, France would meet its targets.

Colorectal cancer gene database helpful in furthering research

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? The CRCgene database, which gathers all genetic association studies on colorectal cancer, allows for researchers to accurately interpret the risk factors of the disease and provides insight into the direction of further colorectal cancer research, according to a study published Sept. 27 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Approximately 950,000 new cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed each year. The risk of developing the disease also increases with age, and as life expectancy rises, the incidence continues to grow. These factors paired with rising health care costs have made both diagnosis and treatments for the disease costly. While diet and lifestyle may affect colorectal cancer incidence, so may genetic factors, and it is important to determine which genetic factors are most heavily associated with colorectal cancer incidence.

In order to determine the genetic factors associated with colorectal cancer, Julian Little, Ph.D., of the Department of Epidemiology and Community Medicine at the University of Ottawa and colleagues, gathered data from previously published guidelines for assessing cumulative evidence on genetic association studies, and performed meta-analyses on all the data, compiling all genetic association studies published in the field. The credibility of the studies was determined by the Venice criteria and the Bayesian False Discovery Probability (BFDP) test.

The researchers found 16 independent gene variants had the most highly credible links to colorectal cancer, with 23 variants. "The number of common, low-penetrance variants that appear to be associated with colorectal cancer is very much less than anticipated, therefore decreasing the feasibility of combining variants as a profile in a prediction tool for stratifying screening modalities on primary prevention approaches," the authors write. Still, they feel that, "the analysis here provides a resource for mining available data and puts into context the sample sizes required for the identification of true associations."

Technology designed for use by astronauts works to save trapped miners

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? A technology designed for use by astronauts in the hazardous environment of space has found a lifesaving use in another dangerous occupation, but this time on Earth, or rather under it: coal mining.

Paragon Space Development Corp. of Tucson, Ariz., is providing the air revitalization system it matured under a NASA Space Act Agreement to Mine Shield LLC of Lancaster, Ky., for use in its underground miner refuge chambers. These air-tight metal chambers are used by miners as lifesaving havens when trapped underground, providing air, water and food until rescued.

"This is a great example of NASA investment fostering entrepreneurial activity in other markets," said Phil McAlister, director of NASA's Commercial Spaceflight Development in Washington, D.C. "The technology was developed as part of an effort to stimulate the private sector to develop commercial space transportation concepts and enable capabilities for future commercial support of human spaceflight with U.S. taxpayer dollars and Paragon's private investment. The company then found another market for it, leading to the development of a new commercial product and service, which will help save the lives of American miners."

In 2010, NASA began to invest in the commercial sector's capability to support transport of crew to and from low Earth orbit. During this initiative through a Space Act Agreement, NASA invested approximately $1.5 million of American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009 economic stimulus funds in Paragon to mature its air purifying system.

Astronaut survival in space depends on a continuous source of breathable air. Paragon improved its design, manufactured and tested an engineering development unit that controls carbon dioxide, humidity, trace contaminants, airborne particulates, air circulation and cooling. Key elements of this technology could play an important role in the life support systems for future deep space exploration missions.

"Our air revitalization system recycles the air by using a series of scrubbers, filters and catalysts that purify the air over and over again," said Taber MacCallum, chief executive officer of Paragon. "The fact that this system, which was developed for human space exploration, has other important applications here on Earth shows how NASA and space exploration energizes American innovation."

Paragon was approached by the U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration to see if the NASA-developed technology could be used to improve the safety and effectiveness of mine refuge chambers.

Cheers as NFL refs return: 'It's good to be back'

BALTIMORE (AP) ? Referee Gene Steratore turned on his microphone to greet the captains of the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens for the pre-game coin toss.

"Good evening, men," Steratore said. "It's good to be back."

The stadium erupted in a roar.

Yes, the real refs are back. Official harmony is restored to the NFL.

Steratore and his seven-man crew donned their familiar stripes for the first game of Week 4 after three weeks of replacement officials created moments of chaos throughout the league. The officials ran a mostly smooth and efficient game through three quarters Thursday night, with no headline-making calls as the Ravens took a 23-10 lead over the Browns.

"You know we always pride ourselves in being a face without a name," Steratore, a 10-year league veteran, told The Associated Press about an hour before kickoff. "This will be a little different, but I don't expect it to last too long. And that's the goal ? is that we can let them get through that portion of this. It's happy to be back, it's happy to be appreciated. But then as soon as the game starts, it's happy to disappear again and let the entertainers entertain."

Everyone on all sides was happy to see the familiar faces they usually love to boo, and the welcome-back love began early. About an hour before kickoff, the officials walked on the field and heard cheers from the early arrivals. A few minutes later, Steratore was shaking hands with Browns coach Pat Shurmur near midfield and getting a hug from Ravens face-of-the-franchise Ray Lewis at the 30-yard line.

Later, when the crew returned, they walked on the field they received a standing ovation and doffed their caps to the crowd. One fan held up a sign that read: "Finally! We get to yell at real refs! Welcome back!"

"The other refs just made dumb calls," said Jessie Riley, a 15-year-old fan wearing an Ed Reed jersey. "I couldn't stand them. Now we won't get robbed; everything will be fair ? hopefully."

A lockout of the league's regular officials ended late Wednesday, two days after a disputed touchdown catch on the last play of "Monday Night Football" brought debate over the use of the replacements to a fevered pitch nationwide. The Seattle Seahawks were awarded the score ? and a 14-12 win ? over the Green Bay Packers, a result that Commissioner Roger Goodell acknowledged "may have pushed the parties further along" in the talks.

"Obviously when you go through something like this it is painful for everybody," Goodell said. "Most importantly, it is painful for our fans. We are sorry to have to put our fans through that, but it is something that in the short term you sometimes have to do to make sure you get the right kind of deal for the long term and make sure you continue to grow the game."

The deal is only tentative ? it must be ratified by 51 percent of the union's 121 members in a vote scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Dallas ? but both sides nevertheless went forward with the plan to have the regulars back for Thursday's game.

So Steratore hustled to Baltimore, making the 3?-hour drive Thursday morning from his home in the Pittsburgh area. He's usually in place the day before a game, but none of his regular pregame meetings had to be changed because the Browns-Ravens game was at night.

"Very elated to be back," he said. "It feels like being back home."

Steratore, who is a basketball official in the Big East Conference among others, also was fully aware he would be jeered the first time he makes a questionable call ? just like always.

"Without a question," he said. "I've been yelled at by my own children many times, so this won't be any different."

Sure enough, the same fans that cheered the coin toss let out a full round of boos when line judge Jeff Seeman toss his yellow flag some 20 yards to whistle Baltimore safety Bernard Pollard for a personal foul in the third quarter. Replays showed it was a good call: Pollard led with his helmet to make contact with a defenseless receiver, costing the Ravens 15 yards in a drive that led to a field goal for the Browns.

Steratore's crew nearly made a misstep in the first quarter, incorrectly spotting the ball by 2 yards after a misapplication of the rules following a holding call on the Browns. But two members of the crew caught the mistake and notified the referee before the next snap. A brief huddle ensued, and the ball was moved to its correct spot.

The crew made it clear early that it wouldn't tolerate the extra pushing and shoving after the whistle that had been frequently permitted by the replacements. Offsetting personal fouls were called on Cleveland's Johnson Bademosi and Baltimore's James Ihedigbo for extracurricular roughness on a punt return.

Steratore had to make a trip to the replay monitor for the same play to review a turnover. The replays clearly showed that Cleveland's Joshua Cribbs had fumbled, so Steratore confirmed the ruling on the field. Cribbs had his helmet knocked off and was injured on the play, creating the only lengthy delay in the first three quarters.

There were 12 penalties called through three quarters, mostly the familiar calls for holding and false start. There was a rare ? and indisputable ? whistle for fair catch interference on a punt return on Cleveland, and a hands-to-the-face call on Baltimore's Mitchell Schwartz was so obvious that it drew three flags.

Steratore and his crew set up shop in the designated "Officials Locker Room" in the bowels of the stadium. He emerged about 2? hours before kickoff to talk briefly to a stadium official about the wireless on-field microphone the referee wears. He later held a regular pregame meeting with stadium crew, telling them to "make sure we run this thing as smoothly" as they had in his previous visits to Baltimore.

Steratore then walked down the tunnel and onto the field, pacing the sidelines with little fanfare because he was still wearing his coat and tie.

The lockout ended after marathon negotiations produced an eight-year agreement to end the lockout that began in June. However, for the Packers, Redskins, Lions and other teams who voiced their displeasure with calls that might have swayed games, the agreement doesn't change their records.

The commissioner said he watched Monday night's frenetic Packers-Seahawks finish at home.

"You never want to see a game end like that," he said.

The new agreement will improve officiating in the future, Goodell asserted, reducing mistakes like those made Monday and making the strains of the last three weeks worthwhile.

Goodell acknowledged "you're always worried" about the perception of the league.

"Obviously, this has gotten a lot of attention," he said. "It hasn't been positive, and it's something that you have to fight through and get to the long term. ... We always are going to have to work harder to make sure we get people's trust and confidence in us."

The dispute even made its way to the campaign trail, with President Barack Obama's spokesman, Jay Carney, calling Thursday "a great day for America."

"The president's very pleased that the two sides have come together," Carney said.

From taboo to main stream, women's tattoos are a popular form of ...

1:01 pm arts and entertainment news

There was a time in western history when the idea of a woman getting a tattoo would have been considered improper and only for the less desired women in society. As time has progressed, however, that has changed dramatically. Tattoos for women have no become extremely popular all over the western world. Most women choose feminine designs for their tattoos such as flowers, butterflies, and stars. Usually women get tattoos that are smaller in size compared to men, but that is also beginning to change as tattoo artists create more and more designs that are feminine, beautiful, but also bigger in size. The future of tattoos for females seems to be a positive one.?

Klitschko brothers remember Corrie Sanders in good words - Bettor

Klitschko brothers remember Corrie Sanders in good words ? Boxing News

Wladimir Klitschko and Vitali Klitschko are saddened to hear about the death of former world heavyweight champion Corrie Sanders. The South African fighter was shot twice by thugs during a birthday party at a local restaurant on Saturday night. He died of his injuries on Sunday morning.

?It was a shock to Vitali and Wladimir as well as myself when I heard the news,? said Tom Loeffler, the managing director of K2 Promotions, owned by the Klitschko brothers. ?Corrie was a world champion boxer and a true gentleman and a pleasure to work with outside the ring.?

A statement released by the promotions stated, ?We were shocked to learn of the sudden death of Corrie Sanders and we want to express our sincere condolences to his family. We will remember Corrie as a great person both inside and outside the ring. He was a great fighter with a big heart who always positively represented the sport of boxing.?

Sanders defeated Wladimir Klitschko in 2008 via second round knockout. It was this win over Wladimir that got him immediate recognition. However, later on, he could not defeat Vitali Klitschko and lost the WBC title to him.

News of Corrie Sanders? murder had spread like wildfire. Since he was a great fighter and surely a great for champion during his reign, he is being missed by the boxing fraternity deeply. Fans mourned for Sanders locally and internationally. They showed their support through social media updates and public statements.

As of now, police is investigating the crime scene and has promised to get hold of the criminals as soon as possible. Sanders was announced dead by police on Sunday morning. He suffered a shot at the back and one in his stomach area, while trying to save his daughter.

For now, the boxing fraternity has suffered a great loss. Sanders was a warrior at heart and probably the only one to beat Wladimir Klitschko this bad. His fights against Wladimir Klitschko and Vitali Klitschko were among his best. He was known for his strength and his huge frame, probably the main reason why he defeated Wladimir.

Pre-Existing Injuries | Personal Injury Attorney in Cleveland, OH ...

Dealing with an insurance adjuster can be challenging when you have a pre-existing injury. In order to protect your claim and rights, contact a personal injury attorney in Cleveland. He or she can explain the legal options that may be available. Having a pre-existing injury can quickly cause your personal injury claim to be diminished or outright denied.

Although you may not tell the insurance company about previous accidents or previous injuries, adjusters often utilize various resources for discovering this information. The adjuster may try and use this information against you in your claim if they find any evidence of pre-existing injuries or previous accidents.

Early in the claims process, the insurance adjuster will not only ask you about the facts surrounding the accident in question, but they will likely ask if you have previously been injured in an accident. You may think answering no will protect your claim, but this may actually damage it.

Therefore, before you even deal with an insurance adjuster, speak with an attorney. He or she can help counter any assumptions or accusations the insurance company may make.

Like it or not, pre-existing injuries will factor into your personal injury claim. Such injuries may negatively impact your claim, which is why many choose to seek legal counsel from the start.

OU PhD student wins first prize at international tissue engineering ...

An OU PhD student has scooped first prize for her research at a prestigious event in Vienna.

Melanie Georgiou won first prize for her oral presentation at the Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS) World Congress in Vienna earlier this month (September 2012).

Melanie presented her interim findings on work using stem cells from adipose tissue, which is part of a bigger project to develop tissue-engineered implantable devices for the surgical repair of the peripheral nervous system.

She said: ?It was a great opportunity to showcase our research and I feel honoured to have won! My research indicates that adipose tissue can be used as a source of cells that could be combined with natural biomaterials to engineer new nervous system tissue. Building replacement nerve tissue in this way may one day be useful in repairing peripheral nerves that have been damaged by trauma.?

Dr James Phillips, Lecturer in Health Sciences and Melanie?s PhD supervisor, said: ?Melanie?s achievement is remarkable and her work has been instrumental in furthering the overall project. Peripheral nervous system injuries that result in extensive loss of nerve tissue can currently only be treated using grafts of healthy nerves from elsewhere in a patient, resulting in additional damage and limited functional recovery.

"To build an effective replacement tissue that could be used as an alternative to a nerve graft requires a source of suitable cells. Melanie demonstrated how cells from a patient?s fat tissue could potentially form the living cellular component of a tissue engineered replacement nerve. This part of the project involved a collaboration between the tissue engineers at the OU and adipose stem cell experts in Sweden.?

Melanie?s work is part of the work of the Open University?s Biomedical Research Network. Her supervisors are Dr James Phillips, Dr Jane Loughlin and Dr Jon Golding. Further information about this research can be found at: www.jamesphillips.org

4 DIY SEO Tips for the Small Business Owner | Search Influence ...

martinis for DIY SEO

My husband and I have some friends who are in town every year at the end of August, without fail, so we know we have a dinner date with this couple at the peak of hurricane season every year.

Hurricane Isaac 2012This year, we met our friends on the Saturday night after Hurricane Isaac passed through. Our friends had another couple in New Orleans who had been without power going on five days, so they were desperate to get out of their hot, humid house and enjoy good food in the air conditioning and possibly have a drink or three. The more the merrier, so the four of us were meeting the two of them at the bar.

This restaurant is usually very popular, but was especially hopping that night because they had power. Most of the items on the menu were sold out, but we enjoyed the few things the kitchen still had. So in conversation she asked did I work?? what did I do? ? the way these conversations usually go. When I told her, her eyes lit up, and I was her best friend that evening. She had a 2 year old yoga studio that was doing decently, and she wanted the yoga business to be strong and really successful. She recognized that the web was an untapped potential for her, and she was overwhelmed with her known options and with the options she knew probably existed but didn?t know about.

Search Influence has a mission that simply states ?We are here to help small business succeed online.? It is our company goal to help this small business owner who was sitting across from me, and I would love to be able to help her dominate the yoganistas in her city.

I have had this experience more than a few times, where a very small, very local business has absolutely no marketing budget, but they know they need to do ?stuff? online to grow or even just to survive. I?m not talking about businesses local to their city; I?m talking about businesses that serve their neighborhood primarily. Super local.

A few suggestions for a very small business who has done almost nothing online yet.

If I met the owner of a very small, very locally-focused business who had done virtually nothing online and had very little time to devote to online marketing, what priorities would I tell that SMB owner for DIY SEO?

I polled our Account Managers to see how much they agreed/disagreed with me, so these priorities are the collective answer of most of our accounts team. The difficulty is there is so much an SMB owner could be doing, but my intent was to focus on those things that are not technical ? i.e. no website edits. A lot of business owners that I meet that offer services to a very specific community don?t know how to edit their websites because they have never had to, and they are busy working on growing the business, taking care of personnel, managing operations, et cetera.

With that in mind, here is by no means a comprehensive list of all things a business owner can do on his/her own ? just a few things that came up in my conversation and then bounced around our accounts team.

Totally unscientific DIY SEO survey

Countdown of DIY SEO Tips based on number of responses of my totally unscientific internal survey ?

#4 ? with only 1 survey responder considering it as the priority for an SMB?s very limited time and money ? monthly newsletters. Monthly newsletters are a great tool for many businesses. However, the business has to build up an email list of recipients first. You can buy a list, but it?s so much better to build the contacts yourself with your customers optioning in to receive your message in their inbox. You also have the challenge of deciding what message makes an impact on your business but also is interesting to your email group.

You need to grow your email list first, and realize that you are messaging people who are likely already customers. In all I agree that this is a valuable tool, but not for a super small business at such an early phase of operations.

Facebook fan building#3 ? 1 response suggesting an offer made through Facebook. This also is a valuable tool, but again, the business generally has to have some Fans on Facebook before they start offering coupons and contests and all of that jazz. My yoga-diva dinner companion did not have a Facebook Page worth mentioning, so this would not be an option for her yet.

#2 ? 4 responses voted for regular Facebook updating. Our accounts team sees every day how a well-maintained Facebook Page can work for a small business. It?s exciting to see strong fan building, active commenting, and referral traffic driving to the client?s website. All of this can be very effective (and fun!). It absolutely be a valuable tool when developed at the right time in a business?s growth.

fantastic Facebook fan buildingOne of our accounts team responded to my internal survey, ?Facebook Updates and Newsletters are great, but they are worthless unless they have a following. To me, Facebook could be easier for one person to manage, but significant effort would have to be made to promote the Facebook Page.?

Just like monthly newsletters and making an offer on Facebook, you have to build to a level where you have an audience to whom you can broadcast your message. Lots of work has to be done for the Facebook Page before it?s going to work for you.

#1 ? Tied for #1 ? 5 responses for ?Create/edit listings in 10 online directories other than Google+.? If a small business owner had only 1 hour to devote to their online identity, 5 of our accounts team suggested that s/he should review the businesses? listing in 10 directories other than Google+. My totally unscientific survey didn?t indicate which 10 directories, but it can be assumed that the list would include directories such as Yelp, Yahoo, Bing, YellowPages, and Superpages. There are countless other examples, but you want to devote your time only to those directories that you have seen often enough like Kudzu or Merchant Circle.

#1 ? Tied for #1 ? 5 of the accounts team responded that claiming Google+ Local Page is the thing you should spend a few minutes claiming and filling up with your business information, maybe some pictures.

This was my priority suggestion at dinner that night. She wasn?t sure what a Google+ Local listing was, a lot of business owners don?t, and they should.

(TIP! If you claim your G+ Local listing, claim it in an email box that you won?t mind sharing with an SEO agency ? that is, don?t claim G+ with your personal email account. One day you might hire a website promotion company like Search Influence to help your rank better in Google results, and when you do, you will want your account manager to have the login to your G+ ? but if it?s the same account as your personal email, you might not want to share it.)

There are countless small business DIY SEO tips for the savvy owner out there. What are some of your favorites?

Libyan troops raid rogue brigade's base

TRIPOLI, Libya (CNN) ?

Libyan army troops raided a former military base in Tripoli Sunday, kicking out a rogue infantry brigade and detaining its members.

The raid came shortly after the army issued an ultimatum giving unauthorized militias 48 hours to withdraw from military compounds, public buildings and property belonging to members of the former regime in the country's capital and surrounding areas. A statement from the army vowed to "use force to carry out these orders," the state-run LANA news agency said.

The brigade targeted by troops Sunday had not been following orders from Libya's military command, the Libyan army's National Mobile Force said in a statement posted on its Facebook page.

Militias and other unauthorized armed groups have come under increased scrutiny since individuals from a radical Islamist group were accused of involvement in the attack at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi earlier this month that left four Americans dead.

Mohamed al-Magariaf, president of Libya's General National Congress, has said rogue militias would be disbanded.

On Friday, hundreds marched in the eastern city of Benghazi and took over the headquarters of Islamist militia Ansar al Sharia. Protesters Friday demanded an end to all security activities of armed groups operating outside the official command of the army or police.

On Saturday, state news and a source said two Islamist militias had agreed to close their bases in the eastern Libyan city of Derna. A third base will be shut on Sunday, said the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The state-run LANA news agency said the militias, which it identified as Bou Salim Martyrs and Ansar al Sharia, will also disband.

Members of Ansar al Sharia are among the eight people detained in connection with the September 11 assault on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya's prime minister said last week, though he added that not all the attackers came from one specific group.

Initial reports indicated that, ahead of the consular attack, Ansar al Sharia had organized a protest to decry an inflammatory film that mocks the Prophet Mohammed and also protest the United States, where the film was privately produced.

(AP) ? Operating with little sleep and much emotion, Torrey Smith played a magnificent game under the most difficult circumstances.

His teammates on the Baltimore Ravens helped Smith cope, then provided him a victory for his effort.

Rookie Justin Tucker kicked a 27-yard field goal as time expired, giving the Ravens a 31-30 victory over the New England Patriots on Sunday night in a rematch of the AFC championship game.

Playing less than 24 hours after his younger brother died in a motorcycle accident, Smith scored two touchdowns and caught six passes for 127 yards. Only hours earlier, he wasn't even sure if he would suit up.

"It was tough. I didn't know until 4 o'clock if I was going to play," Smith said. "I only had like an hour of sleep. Emotionally, I didn't know how I was going to hold up."

Smith left the team hotel at 1 a.m. Sunday to be with his family. Upon arriving at the stadium, the familiar surroundings helped Smith get ready to go.

"When I came here, the more I was grounded. The more comfortable I began to feel," he said. "I'm glad I came back up here. It helped me out a lot."

Coach John Harbaugh said: "If you're around athletics, I guess you feel like it's an escape, an opportunity to do what he does. He's being doing it his whole life; he knows what to do. When Torrey said he wanted to play, the decision was finished. He was going to get the opportunity to play, he deserved that."

A moment of silence was observed before the game for Smith's brother, 19-year-old Tevin Jones.

"It means a lot not just for us but for my family. ... That's for my little brother,'" Smith said.

When the teams met in January, the Patriots squeezed out a three-point win at home to advance to the Super Bowl. The stakes weren't nearly as high in this one, yet the game was eerily similar.

In the previous meeting, Billy Cundiff missed a 32-yard field goal in the closing seconds. In the encore, Tucker ? who took the job away from Cundiff in training camp ? drove his kick just inside the right upright.

The game-winning kick followed a pass interference call against Devin McCourty, who was covering Jacoby Jones.

As the officials were leaving the field, Patriots coach Bill Belichick grabbed one of them by the arm. He didn't pursue as the official continued to run off the field.

"I'm not going to comment on that," Belichick said. "You saw the game. What did we have, 30 penalties called in that game?"

Actually, 24, including 14 against the Ravens for 135 yards.

Baltimore (2-1) won its 12th straight at home behind Joe Flacco, who went 28 for 39 for 382 yards and three touchdowns.

Tom Brady completed 28 of 41 passes for 335 yards and a score for the Patriots (1-2), who fell below .500 for the first time since Week 1 of 2003.

"We didn't do what we needed to do to help our offense tonight," Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wolfork said. "And it (stinks), because coming into the game, I think we had a pretty good idea of how we wanted to play it. First quarter, it showed. It seems after that, we really couldn't get off the field. Offense played their tails off and we just left them out to dry. We can't do that."

New England led 13-0 after the first quarter and 30-21 with 14 minutes left, but couldn't make either lead stand up.

Wes Welker had eight catches for 142 yards and Brandon Lloyd caught nine passes for 108 yards for the Patriots, who fell to 6-1 against the Ravens in the regular season ? 7-2 including the playoffs.

Down 20-14, the Ravens opened the second half with an 80-yard drive that ended with a 7-yard touchdown run by Ray Rice. Brady matched that with an 80-yard march of his own, repeatedly picking on cornerback Cary Williams, before Danny Woodhead scored on a 3-yard run to put New England ahead.

After Stephen Gostkowski kicked his third field goal to make it 30-21, Smith caught a 5-yard touchdown pass with 4:01 left to get the Ravens to 30-28. Flacco went 6 for 7 for 76 yards in the 92-yard drive.

Baltimore executed the game-winning drive in the final 2 minutes.

New England took a 13-0 lead before the Ravens got their initial first down. Then, after Baltimore went up 14-13, Brady engineered a frantic touchdown drive at the end of the first half to put the Patriots back in front.

Welker, who came in with only eight catches in two games, played a key role for New England in the opening minutes. He recovered a fumble by Brady on the Patriots' second play, and on New England's second series Welker broke loose on the left sideline for a 59-yard completion that set up a 37-yard field goal.

The long pass to Welker pushed Brady into 12th place on the career yardage list, past Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana (40,551).

On the first play following the kickoff, Steve Gregory intercepted a pass by Flacco and took it 36 yards to the Baltimore 6. On third down, rookie Brandon Bolden ran in from the 2 for his first NFL touchdown.

Late in the first quarter, Gostkowski kicked a 49-yard field goal for a 13-0 lead.

After two three-and-outs and an interception, Flacco found his rhythm the fourth time he got the ball.

Flacco moved the Ravens 82 yards in 13 plays in a drive culminated by a 25-yard touchdown pass to Smith. Then, after a New England punt, Baltimore covered 92 yards in eight plays. The capper was a 20-yard TD pass to tight end Dennis Pitta, who hurdled Gregory inside the 10 before completing his romp into the end zone.

Brady answered with a touchdown pass of his own, a 7-yarder to Julian Edelman with 2 seconds left to cap an 81-yard, beat-the-clock march.

NOTES: Baltimore amassed 503 yards in offense. Rice ran for 101 yards on 20 carries. ... Edelman left with a hand injury. ... Baltimore punted only three times.
