Bath Salts: Were They Behind "Miami Zombie" Attack?

Police and doctors are reportedly blaming "bath salts" for the bizarre, grisly behavior of Rudy Eugene, who began devouring Ronald Poppo's face last weekend.

We're not talking garden-variety aromatherapy products here, though.

The term "bath salts" can also be used to describe illegal, designer street drugs that have been linked to violent delusions and even death, investigators say.

Either the zombie apocalypse is nigh, or Eugene was on something strong enough to prompt a psychotic, gruesome meltdown that seems incomprehensible.

Rudy Eugene Mug ShotRonald Poppo Mug Shot

Police were forced to shoot Rudy Eugene when he refused to stop eating Poppo's face; He growled at them, naked, and resumed feasting before being killed.

It took multiple gunshots to take him down. Ronald Poppo is a homeless man with no known connection to Eugene and is in critical condition at a hospital.

Bath salts were also blamed in another Florida incident in which a man overdosed on the drug and died. Similar cases may prompt stronger DEA action.

The DEA banned chemicals commonly used in bath salts: mephedrone, MDPV, and methylone. Sale of these items now results in federal drug charges.

At least 38 states have enacted bath-salt bans, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures, instituting penalties for possession and trafficking.

Of course, because bath salts are made by "street chemists," there's really no way to know what chemicals are actually contained in any given quantity.

There's also no medical test to detect bath salts in a patient. "The only way we know if someone has taken them is if they tell you," one expert said.

NFCC Financial Education Blog ? Thousands Seek Financial ...

By Gail Cunningham

The NFCC?s Member Agencies assist more than three million people each year with 12,500 consumers receiving counseling to resolve their financial distress on an average day.

Whether the financial concern is related to building a budget, debt repayment, buying their first home, or saving the one they?re in, each day thousands of consumers recognize that the NFCC Agencies represent the gold standard in credit counseling, and reach out to them for help. Many continue to struggle with deep financial distress.? It is important that they realize they are not alone, and that substantive help is available either free of charge or at low cost.

The average consumer who came to an NFCC Member Agency for counseling in 2011 was between 35 and 54 years of age, had a household income of $34,809, and owed $26,878 in unsecured debt spread across five credit cards, resulting in an unsecured debt to income ratio of 77 percent.

Through the Debt Management Plan (DMP), one of the many resolution tools available to the counselors, $2.27 billion was returned to creditors by NFCC Agencies on behalf of consumers last year. This significant amount of money reflects how often a skilled counselor can find relief for those who think their situation is beyond repair.

Additionally, NFCC Members are Executive Office of the United States Trustee (EOUST) -approved providers of the mandated bankruptcy pre-filing counseling and per-discharge education.? Not surprisingly, the number one reason consumers gave for seeking bankruptcy was reduced income.? However, poor money management skills was the reason given second most often, reflecting the continued need for financial education.?

Whether struggling with loss of income, an underwater mortgage, or seemingly insurmountable debt, consumers owe it to themselves to seek help from a trained and certified credit counselor.? As a convenience to consumers, NFCC Agencies offer counseling in-person, by phone, or online.? All things considered, there is little reason to continue drowning in financial distress when help is so readily available.

Children today may be busier than ever, but Case Western Reserve University psychologists have found that their imagination hasn't suffered in fact, it appears to have increased.

Psychologists Jessica Dillon and Sandra Russ expected the opposite outcome when they analyzed 14 play studies that Russ conducted between 1985 and 2008. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQb95itdoCM).

But as they report in "Changes in Children's Play Over Two Decades," an article in the Creativity Research Journal, the data told a story contrary to common assumptions. First, children's use of imagination in play and their overall comfort and engagement with play activities actually increased over time. In addition, the results suggested that children today expressed less negative feelings in play. Finally, their capacity to express a wide range of positive emotions, to tell stories and to organize thoughts stayed consistent.

Dillon, a fifth-year doctoral student, and Russ, a professor in psychological sciences at Case Western Reserve, decided to revisit the play data after a 2007 report from the American Academy of Pediatrics showed children played less.

They set out to see if having less time for unstructured play affected the processes in play that influence cognition and emotional development, a focus of the play research.

The pretend play studies focused on children between the ages of 6 and 10. The children's play was measured for comfort, imagination, the range and amount of positive to negative emotions used and expressed, and the quality of storytelling by using Russ' Affect in Play Scale (APS).

The APS is a five-minute, unstructured play session. Children are asked to play freely with three wooden blocks and two human hand puppets. The play is videotaped, and later reviewed and scored for imagination, expression of emotions, actions and storytelling.

Russ explains that children who exhibit good play skills with imaginative and emotional play situations have shown better skills at coping, creativity and problem solving. She stresses there is no link between being a good player and intelligence.

The APS data provided a consistent measurement and research structure over the 23-year period. Russ said the consistency of having the same tool to measure play provided this unique opportunity to track changes in play.

"We were surprised that outside of imagination and comfort, play was consistent over time," said Dillon.

Russ did voice concern about the decrease in displayed negative emotions and actions. "Past studies have linked negative emotions in play with creativity," she said.

But even with the lack of time to play, Russ said, children, like some other forms of higher mammals, have a drive to play and always will find ways to do it.

As new stimuli, like video games and the Internet, have crept into everyday life, Russ explains that children might gain cognitive skills from using technology where they once got it from acting out situations in play. Skills might also develop from daydreaming.

Russ said future research will need to focus on whether acting out emotions and creating stories in play is as important as it once was in helping children to be creative.

Even though children have less time these days for play, Russ still advises giving children time for it, adding that it helps children develop emotional and cognitive abilities.

Jason ?Mayhem? Miller retires from fighting at UFC 146 loss and dismissal from UFC

Jason "Mayhem" Miller is a man of his word.

The now-unemployed fighter said before his bout with C.B. Dollaway that if he'd lost, he'd retire. He dropped a decision at UFC 146 on Saturday, then was cut from the UFC.

On Monday's "MMA Hour," he said he's walking away from fighting after winning 23 bouts and losing nine.

"Every fighter gives the same answer when they say they're retired. Pretty much every fighter says 'I'm retired until I need money.' I'm a pretty smart dude, I have other avenues open to me."

Miller hosts MTV's "Bully Beatdown," and is, as he puts it, a smart dude. He gets business and selling his own brand, which is why he uses the flamboyant entrances that Dana White blasted.

He also shed light on the "backstage incident" White referred to when discussing Miller's dismissal at the UFC 146 post-fight press conference.

"It was my mask," Miller said. "Burt suddenly started yelling about my mask. I had a gas mask for the troops underneath my paper bag, and Burt started telling me right as I'm walking out for the fight. I'm trying to get focused instead of arguing about a paper bag. Maybe it was my fault for, I don't know, I thought we had an understanding once I start walking out to the cage that now I'm working, but obviously we're not on a playing field of mutual respect."

He is referring to UFC backstage director and jack of all trades Burt Watson. UFC events being the well-run events they are has much to do with Watson and the respect fighters afford him. If there is just one rule that supersedes every other in the UFC, it's listen to Burt. Fighters, employees, media and anyone doing business with the UFC knows this. Whether Miller is right or wrong is not important.

Now, Miller will have both the time and freedom to figure out his next move. He tweeted on Tuesday:

Don't worry. I'm not dead. Just analyzing it all so I can share my human experience with you.

Though his next move won't be in a cage, it will still be interesting to see what Miller does with his post-fighting life

Japan in Eugene (Part 1: Gaming in College) | The Modern ...

This is the start of a small series of posts where I document the influence of Japanese culture in my local area (the small towns of Eugene and Springfield).?When you look around for small businesses that interest you, you may be surprised at what you find. Whether you realize it or not, there are business/corporate factors that come into play that influence what we think about our culture.

I start my tour on the campus of the University of Oregon where I study. Colleges are not (and should not be) businesses by any means, but both colleges and businesses?fall under the broad range of?institutions that provide resources to citizens. One reason that colleges are becoming great resources for learning about Japanese culture because they are quickly adapting video games as a means for instruction, not to mention all the articles about video games one can find in college library databases already (Dickey).

My university is also kind enough to provide a limited selection of games to check out. The video shows a small cart that houses every single game available, but behind the checkout desk lies game consoles, DDR dance pads, Rock Band instruments, and other accessories available to check out as well. While some?students may use the games for entertainment and social events, they can potentially learn a lot from certain games. History through Assassin?s Creed. Problem solving in the Portal?games. Caltech even offers DDR?to satisfy a?PE elective credit. There is a certain value to every click on every button of the controller. When used properly, I can foresee more video game classes coming in the future.

Though as evident by the relatively small catalogue of games, getting the funding to support video games is not easy. With the looming social stigma on video games and the recent recession, among other reasons, it is still hard to apply video games to interdisciplinary studies and directly learn from them in the classroom [although I did have one philosophy lecture on gender identity in gaming and Internet culture, but applications like these are still rare]. Even the DDR class in Caltech was cancelled for this academic year (not sure why). Nevertheless, the?fact that?US schools are offering such resources?is evidence of the merging of pop culture and academics in new ways, allowing students to engage in learning like never before.

Home Care in Palm Springs "A Vacation? But I'm a Family Caregiver!"

Lisa Marie Blaskie RN, CSA, CCM, PMP, Owner

Lisa Marie Blaskie RN, CSA, CCM

?Go on Vacation? But I?m a Family Caregiver!?

?Out and About: The Home Care Perspective? looked at the benefits seniors gain from enjoying time away from home to visit friends and family, and to take part in favorite activities. Many family caregivers provide the transportation, support and supervision to make it possible for loved ones who are dealing with health challenges to enjoy mood-boosting activities away from home.

But what about caregivers themselves? Many report they haven?t had a vacation in years. ?I get two weeks off annually,? reports one daughter who provides care for her elderly parents in her home. ?I use those days taking Mom to the doctor, helping Dad to his stroke rehabilitation appointments?there?s no time for me.? She admits wistfully, ?Sometimes when my co-workers send a postcard from Hawaii or New York, it makes me feel a little envious. I want Mom and Dad to be safe and happy, but I wish I could go on a vacation myself.?

These days, many Americans could be described as ?vacation-deprived.? More than half of us failed to take a vacation at all last year. Higher fuel costs make travel more expensive. Many workers find it harder to get away as downsized companies ask for more work from fewer employees. Family caregivers may be dealing with all the above, as well as juggling their loved one?s care needs and even the needs of children still living at home.

Savvy employers know that vacation time is important for employee wellness and morale. A change of scene helps us recharge our emotional batteries. We return to work refreshed and with renewed energy. Experts on family caregiving likewise emphasize that caregivers need to take some time off. They remind us of the top rule caregivers should know to avoid burnout: Caring for yourself is an important part of caring for your loved one.

Is it possible for caregivers to take a vacation? Here are some questions to consider:

Can I afford to take a vacation? For many family caregivers, money is tight. But travel need not be prohibitively expensive. Recreation departments and community colleges may offer economy tours. Senior travelers are eligible for special discounts and travel packages. Or consider a ?staycation,? checking out museums and other points of interest in your area, perhaps spending a weekend at a local spa or resort. And don?t be afraid to ask around: Out-of-town friends and family members who know how much you do for your loved one might be happy to open their home to you, or may have an available vacation home or time share.

Won?t I feel guilty about leaving my loved one at home? Remind yourself (and perhaps share with your loved one) that vacationing has demonstrable health benefits. Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh and State University of New York at Oswego recently reported that among 12,000 research subjects, those who took regular vacations were eight times less likely to develop heart disease or have a heart attack. Vacations provide a break from everyday stress. A change of scenery and routine decreases depression, improves sleep, increases mental sharpness and even gives a boost to our immune system. You will return a refreshed and recharged, more effective caregiver.

Who will take care of my loved one while I am away? Friends or family members may be willing to step in while you are gone. If this is not an option, some hospitals and nursing homes offer short-term respite care. But most seniors would rather stay in their own home, in familiar surroundings and with less disruption to their routine. Many families find that in-home care is the perfect solution to keep their loved one safe and comfortable at home. A professional in-home caregiver can provide companionship, assistance with the activities of daily living, housekeeping and meal preparation, medication supervision, and regular reports to you to let you know how your loved one is doing. In-home care provides the peace of mind to allow caregivers to really enjoy their vacation. Said one caregiver, ?I couldn?t begin to relax on the beach if I was worrying that Dad might have left the stove on!?

How can I take off some ?me time? from work when I use all my vacation days providing care for my loved one? This is another way in-home care can support working caregivers. Throughout the year, an in-home caregiver can come to your loved one?s home a few hours a week or full time. The caregiver can take your loved one to healthcare appointments, pick up prescriptions, prepare nutritious meals, provide supervision and companionship for seniors with memory loss?those time-consuming tasks that usually take place during regular working hours and can quickly deplete your vacation time. And the presence of an in-home caregiver provides peace of mind for working caregivers, allowing them to be better employees and better caregivers all year long.

I?m a long-distance caregiver?shouldn?t I spend all my vacations visiting my loved one? Rising numbers of baby boomer caregivers are finding themselves in this situation. Today?s families are often spread out from one end of the country to the other. Vacation time is their only opportunity to get together. If your loved one?s condition permits, how about vacationing together to a pleasant location, perhaps close to their home? (Read ?Travel Health and Safety Tips for Seniors? for information on keeping older adults safe and comfortable on the road.) For long-distance caregivers, in-home care can help with senior loved ones? needs throughout the year so visits can focus more on spending time together. And since you?ve already paid the airfare or perhaps made a long drive, after your visit, take a few ?bonus days? on your own at a location near your loved one?s community.

Analyzing disease transmission at the community level

Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health have found evidence of a role for neighborhood immunity in determining risk of dengue infection. While it is established that immunity can be an important factor in the large-scale distribution of disease, this study demonstrates that local variation at spatial scales of just a few hundred meters can significantly alter the risk of infection, even in a highly mobile and dense urban population with significant immunity. The study is published in May 28 edition of the journal PNAS.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne disease that infects nearly 50 million people worldwide each year, resulting in more than 19,000 deaths. There are four serotypes of dengue virus (DENV1) circulating in Bangkok, Thailand, where the study was conducted. Infection with dengue provides lifelong immunity to the infecting serotype and there is evidence infection temporarily protects from infection by other serotypes. When susceptibility to other serotypes returns there is an increased risk for severe disease. For the study, the research team used the household location of 1,912 confirmed dengue cases in Bangkok that were admitted to a local children's hospital between 1995 and 2000. The available data enabled the researchers to pair dengue serotype infections with specific households.

Observations indicated that immunological memory of dengue serotypes occurs at the neighborhood level in this large urban setting. The researchers developed methods that have broad application to studying the spatiotemporal structure of disease risk where pathogen serotype or genetic information is known.

"We observe patterns of spatiotemporal dependence consistent with the expected impacts of lifelong and short-term immunity, and immune enhancement of disease at distances of under one kilometer," said Henrik Salje, lead author of the study and doctoral candidate in the Bloomberg School's Department of Epidemiology.

"By providing insight into the potential spatial scales that immunity in a population is correlated and distances over which the disease is dispersed, these findings can help us further understand how dengue is being maintained in endemic populations," said the study's senior author, Derek Cummings, PhD, assistant professor with the Bloomberg School's departments of Epidemiology and International Health.

Keep your scholarship money in order - Richard the 3rd's Reference ...

It is completely necessary to get a load of scholarship information at the beginning of the year.

Sometimes it?s completely out of their hands and in the hands of the standards already set by the department of education. The federal money that flows to students has little to do with anyone else but you and your family. I figured that out rather quickly and ever since then I?ve tried to pay for my college with the knowledge I?ve obtained. I don?t think that students truly understand what they get into when they go to college. That?s why I think getting a college financial aid consultant isn?t necessary.?

* "Sparky and Me: My Friendship with Sparky Anderson and the Lessons He Shared About Baseball and Life" by Daniel Ewald, reviewed by Ron Kaplan

A caveat before we begin.

When I first started as a freelancer, I was asked to do an interview with Sparky Anderson following the publication of his 1998 memoir, "They Call Me Sparky," which happened to be written with the assistance of Dan Ewald, a sportswriter who worked as public relations director for the Detroit Tigers for almost 20 years; he co-authored two other

books with Anderson as well and eventually became his business manager. They developed a friendship that lasted until Anderson?s death in November 2010.

As this was my first celebrity encounter, I was fairly nervous. Why should Anderson waste his time with a nobody like me, writing for a scholarly baseball journal? But I committed to the project and made the phone call.

Anderson, the former manager of the Tigers and Cincinnati Reds, could not have been nicer or more generous with his time. We spoke for almost an hour, and after reading "Sparky and Me," Ewald?s deeply emotional memoir, I find much of his philosophy reinforced.

Anderson -- who was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000 -- never believed his status merited him special treatment, nor was he overly impressed by the celebrity of others. As Ewald writes (and as Anderson said in our conversation), he believed that the sportswriter with a small-market outfit was worthy of the same courtesy and consideration as members of the national media.

Anderson was the friend of the caddy, the parking valet, the grocery cashier. He probably could have run for public office if he had chosen, but he wouldn?t have won. A cynical electorate would think him too good to be true, like a character out of a Frank Capra movie.

"Sparky and Me" is basically set during the three-day visit Ewald made to Anderson?s home in California when he learned his friend was dying. They spent the time reminiscing about the good times and realistically considering what lay ahead.

According to Ewald, Anderson was not necessarily a formally religious man. But like many good people, he lived by the Golden Rule: treat others the way you would want to be treated. There are dozens of anecdotes the author shares that serve as examples of such a lifestyle.

It must have been a heartbreaking experience for them both, but Anderson?s bravery shines through, even as they shed tears together. When Ewald left, he had plans to come back in a couple of weeks? time; unfortunately, Anderson passed on before he had that chance. At least they were able to have those three days. We all should be so lucky to have that kind of friendship at least once in our lifetime. * "A Wedding in Haiti" by Julia Alvarez, reviewed by Jana Siciliano

Julia Alvarez has always seemed quite comfortable with reality. Even in her other books, filled with the stories of intertwining relationships between people and the government, there is the sense, the hope, that someday things will work out. Torture and corruption may be on the menu today, but tomorrow it could be filled with cooperation and strength. "A Wedding in Haiti" is a memoir, but it follows the same trajectory; even amidst the rubble of destruction, there is a chance for redemption and rebuilding.

When Alvarez and her husband first bought and then built up a larger coffee plantation in the Dominican Republic, from where the novelist hails, they had no clue that one worker on their land would turn out to be the reason they experience the adventures put forth in this remarkable memoir. A young man named Piti is a great help on the farm and is filled with a joy of life that compels everyone around him to love him. At some point, so taken is he with Alvarez and her husband that he tells her he will be expecting them at his wedding someday. She puts it out of her head until one day, back in Middlebury, Vt., where the couple lives most of the year, she receives a call from Piti, claiming that his wedding has been arranged and she and her husband should come down for it.

Alvarez takes him up on it and finds herself, days later, taking a nine-hour trek through the Dominican Republic to Haiti to experience Piti?s big day. He also asks them to be the godparents to his 4-month-old daughter, a stunner named Ludy. It is love at first sight, but the rough tides in Haiti sweep them into strange and exotic and often frighteningly sad situations. Piti?s relatives take good care of their visitors, and years later, when the earthquake strikes in January 2010, Alvarez once again becomes enmeshed in the lives of her friends in Haiti.

Their families OK because they lived so far from the epicenter, Piti and Eseline draw Alvarez into a detour to Port-au-Prince, where the devastation is experienced firsthand. She fills her story with the amazing resolve and strength of the survivors there as well as pictures of the before-and-after days of the island. And, as Haiti continues to rebuild and redefine its life in so many ways, Alvarez uses this as a way to also examine the experiences of her aging parents, both suffering from Alzheimer?s, struggling in and out of the waves of lucidity like the tumultuous waves of the Haitian seaside.

A heartfelt and pointed look at a world where good and bad are constantly in a lock for the title, "A Wedding in Haiti" is so much more than a love story. Still, that love story -- the one between life and death, between hope and giving up -- is the soul of Alvarez?s life experiences. No one will walk away from this book without having had a compelling and memorable trip to the brink of death and back, a journey actually made fascinating by the beautiful language and open heart of Julia Alvarez, one of the world?s great novelists.

Screening Finds Skin Cancer, But Does It Save Lives? ? Get-Right ...

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) ? Doctors find a high number of malignant tumors when a state-wide skin cancer screening program is introduced, says a new study.

Based on results from a program in Germany, researchers say 116 people need to be screened for skin cancer and five people need to have a biopsy to find one malignant tumor.

They, however, cannot say whether the screenings actually saved lives

RIM may cut 2,000-plus jobs within two weeks

RIM's current chief Thorsten Heins has had to make some tough decisions in the first few months of his tenure -- and he could be making some particularly difficult choices about trimming the rank and file within the next two weeks. Assuming we take the claims of several contacts for Canada's The Globe and Mail at face value, "at least" 2,000 jobs are being cut on or before June 1st. The numbers could climb higher at that: Reuters is bracing for as many as 6,000 layoffs, and has described an unhappy routine of "Goodbye Thursdays" where more recent hires are let go. RIM has turned down comment on what it calls "rumors and speculation," and we'd hope for the sake of those possibly affected that it's not true. Having said this, it's hard not to imagine Heins wanting to streamline the BlackBerry maker as much as possible to adapt to shrinking market share and keep the company afloat until BlackBerry 10 potentially spurs a revival.

RIM may cut 2,000-plus jobs within two weeks originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 26 May 2012 13:41:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Is Equality Important in Your Marriage? Part 3 | Advice in Love ...

Scott started our meeting. ?I think I?ve found a solution to Karen?s feeling unequal,? he said with excitement.
?What do you have in mind?? I inquired.
?It?s a surprise,? Scott answered. ?I wanted to share it with you right here,? he said as he turned toward Karen.
?What are you talking about?? she asked.
?I realized recently that no matter how long you work at your job because of your pay scale you will never be able to save very much for your retirement,? Scott said. ?I decided to give you a gift that would make us equal. I split my retirement savings. I put half my account in a new account under your name. It?s yours to do with as you please. It means you are financially independent. You aren?t forced to be married to me because of money.?
?How do you feel about this?? I asked Karen.
?You have surprised me!? she said looking at Scott. ?I know how hard you?ve worked to create your company and to save for our retirement. I feel deeply touched that you would split equally what you have put away.?
Scott smiled. ?I hope it can solve our equality issue,? he said.
?Not really,? Karen responded. ?It doesn?t make me feel equal. In fact, my awareness that I could never earn and put away what you are giving me makes me feel less equal. It?s like what I see with the people I counsel on disability. The money they get from the government helps them take care of their needs, but it doesn?t make them feel better about themselves. Most the people I see on welfare feel less good about themselves.?
?Well I didn?t intend to make you feel worse about yourself,? Scott said. ?I wanted you to know how much you mean to me. I gave you the gift to express my love and gratitude to you as my wife of twenty-two years. Your support has helped me earn what I?ve saved.?
?I know you intended to help Karen through your gift,? I said. ?Like many gifts, however, it has unintended consequences that you might not have anticipated in your eagerness to help Karen.?
?I know you meant to help me,? Karen responded. ?The money does help me feel secure about the future and being taken care of. But having the same amount of money you have doesn?t make me feel equal.?
?What can I do then,? Scott asked, ?to help you feel like we?re equals??
?You?ve already done it,? Karen replied, ?when you accepted my offer to take charge of our finances. By agreeing to my managing our finances you gave me the opportunity to show how I can help.? She paused. ?Equality isn?t about money or power,? she continued. ?It?s about how we see ourselves and how we feel inside.?
?Is there anything more Scott can do to help you with that?? I asked Karen.
?Scott doesn?t need to rescue me!? she answered. ?I am not a victim.? Her tone was firm. ?Even though I grew up through some abusive experiences with drinking in my family I have chosen not to see myself as a victim. When I used to feel like a victim I got sympathy from my friends but the price of remaining stuck and not feeling good about myself was very high. Blaming others kept me from taking responsibility and making the best of my abilities. I saw friends of mine get stuck in victimhood and I didn?t respect them. What helped me grow was taking opportunities, like I?m now doing managing our finances. I am demonstrating what I can do. I respect myself by doing the job well and Scott might appreciate me too.?
?Are you saying that your own self-respect comes first?? I asked Karen.
?Absolutely,? she answered. ?My self-evaluation has to come first. I don?t want to depend on someone else to make me feel good. It is helpful, at the same time, when Scott honestly validates me for the good job I?m doing. His caring for me and treating me with respect, which he is now doing, is how he helps me.? Following a short pause, she added: ?His feeling good about himself also helps because I see him respect himself and that inspires me to value myself.?
?I learned to be a rescuer growing up,? Scott responded. ?Like Karen I, too, grew up in a family with alcohol problems. I learned to rescue members of my family. I got praise from other people, but it caused me to neglect myself. I became needless and want-less. I didn?t learn how to be clear about what I needed and wanted. As a consequence I became resentful. That?s been a cause of my resentment with you when I didn?t feel like you were doing your share,? he said to Karen.
?When you are being the rescuer and over-functioning it?s easy to become a scorekeeper,? I said. ?You keep track of what your partner does compared to what you do. Scorekeeping is toxic to a marriage. It bases marriage on competition rather than on cooperation.?
?I?ve been a scorekeeper in comparing what Karen does with what I do,? Scott said. ?I see that it?s been bad for our marriage.?
?I was an habitual scorekeeper,? I said. ?My wife and I loved to go to the movies but we preferred different movies. We agreed to trade off whose movie we saw. When we watched one of her movies I used to insist that we go to my movie the very next time. I felt cheated if we didn?t.?
?What changed it?? Karen asked.
?I realized there was a third presence in our marriage,? I explained. ? I started out believing there was just my wife and me. When someone asked me how important our relationship was to me I woke up. I saw that our relationship was very important to me. I wanted to nurture our relationship to make it grow. That?s when I awakened to doing what is good for our relationship. When I went to my wife?s preferred movie several times in a row I felt good about nurturing our relationship. I stopped keeping score.?
?When I realized just recently that my scorekeeping was hurting our marriage,? Scott said, ?I started working on giving it up. I learned that what works best for me is to do the things I see that need doing regardless of what Karen has done. When she sees what I have done she is likewise inspired to do what she sees that needs doing. It generally evens out, and even if it doesn?t, I still can appreciate what I have done for our welfare and feel good about that.?
?I know there were times when you were score-keeping,? Karen responded, ?and I felt your resentment. It felt like you saw yourself as superior and I resented it. I wanted to bring you down. Sometimes I made critical remarks that I knew would hurt you. I?m sure that played a part in our stopping talking. I learned that I felt worse about myself as a consequence of my getting back at you.?
?It is a mistake to try to get equal by bringing someone else down,? I said. ?It doesn?t work because you bring yourself down too. The goal of life is not to win; the goal to grow and share. We get equal by lifting ourselves up and helping others lift themselves. When we want for others what we want for ourselves and act accordingly,? I said, ?everyone rises.?
?In keeping with that spirit,? Karen said looking at Scott, ?what I would appreciate is your putting back into your retirement account the money you gave me, and for you to continue to manage it. In my work I have witnessed too many unintended consequences from trying to make people equal. To administer equality requires a vast government and everyone loses their freedom?-those who are taxed as well as those who receive the distributions as they grow more dependent.?
?Would it feel easier for you to be giving to Karen through the government?? I asked Scott.
?Not at all,? he replied. ?It would feel totally impersonal. My giving to Karen was personal, which is what made it special. And I was choosing to do it which made it generous. Paying taxes feels like charity through intimidation?if you refuse you are fined or put in prison.?
?Is there something else Scott might do that would help?? I asked Karen.
?Yes,? she responded. ?We need to create a good estate plan together.?
Turning to Scott she continued: ?You could find a good estate lawyer for us to draw up our wills and create a trust. With the lawyer?s help we can plan for how to best deal with the illness or death of either of us, how to take care of whoever survives, and how to care for our children and their children.?
?I like the way we are coming together,? Scott said to Karen, ?and especially how I see you as a partner who respects herself and is helping us create a stronger family.?
?There is one more idea I have,? Karen said to Scott. ?I have been talking with my best friend who is urging me to come back to church. Now that I have more time with the children gone I would like to be involved with our church community. People there have been very supportive of us. I would love to have you join me. I believe it would be good for us and would allow us to help others,? Karen said.
?I think it?s a good idea,? Scott said. ?It would be good for our marriage at a time when there isn?t much support for marriages in our society. During the last forty years most people don?t realize the marriage rate in our country has dropped dramatically.?
?You?re right,? Karen said, ?and more than four out of every ten children are now born out of wedlock. What?s more, fewer people, and especially those under the age of forty, are part of a church community. ?
?If we want the church to be here when our grandchildren are born it sounds like we need to get involved,? Scott responded.
Scott and Karen left my office holding hands.
